About the Item

19th century painting by Albert Ritzberger, portrait of a woman in a robe. Signed and dated lower left. Painting has been restored in one place. Dimensions including frame. This is a direct copy after a painting by Angelika Kauffmann in the Gemaldegalerie in Dresden. The original is called 'Portrait of a lady as Vestal Virgin', it dates from circa 1781. Albert Ritzberger (born May 20, 1853 in Pfaffstätt; died November 8, 1915 in Linz) was an Austrian draftsman and painter. Ritzberger comes from a family of teachers, was until 1879 himself a teacher in Lohnsburg am Kobernaußerwald and Henhart. He exhibited his first drawings in a Linz art shop. Because of his chalk portraits, he was able to study at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts with Ferdinand Laufberger in 1876/77 and then study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (1879 to 1884) with Heinrich von Angeli. Encouraged by several awards, he founded his own studio in Gumpendorf in 1884 and married Luise, the daughter of court architect Hans Smattosch, a year later. From 1887 to 1890 he ran his studio in Munich and in 1893 he moved to Salzburg. In 1893 he undertook trips to Italy and Holland, followed by Vienna and Salzburg. From 1890 until his death, he lived and worked partly in Linz and partly in Aschach on the Danube in studios in family-owned properties. From 1887 he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. In Linz and Aschach, one street is named after him.

In it the Madonna stands firmly upon a cloud in the heavens, her Child resting on a delicate veil further supported by a cloud, as he gently wraps his arm around his mother’s neck. From above angels prepare to lower flowers and a wreath, while other angels and seraphim surrounding the two joyfully cavort.
