Andrea Appiani
Jacob's Blessing - Oil on Canvas by Andrea Appiani Il Giovane - Mid-19th Century

Mid-19th Century

About the Item

Jacob's Blessing is an original painting realized in the mid-19th Century by the Italian artist Andrea Appiani Il Giovane (Milan, 1817 - Milan, 1865). Original oil painting on wooden panel. The original gilded frame is included. Very good conditions. Work realized by the Italian artist Andrea Appiani Il Giovane. The time had come for Isaac to give a blessing to his eldest son. Being older than Jacob, Esau thought he was receiving this blessing. But earlier Esau had sold Jacob the right to receive the blessing. Furthermore, before their birth, God had said that Jacob would receive the blessing. The subject of this canvas depicts an episode from Genesis (Genesis 25, 19-34; 27, 28, 1-5) where it is said that Jacob, as a young man, then one of the biblical patriarchs and twin brother of Esau, prefiguration for the Church of the origins of Jesus Christ, stole the blessing of his father, planning, at the instigation of his mother Rebecca, the replacement with his brother Esau. Andrea Appiani il Giovane (Milan, 1817 - Milan, 1865). Grandson of the more famous Andrea Appiani, painter of Napoleon in Italy, like his grandfather he embarked on a career in the field of art and first studied in Rome with Tommaso Minardi and then was a pupil of Francesco Hayez in Milan. He was in charge of the frescoes in the parish church of Bolbeno, while for the Milanese society he devoted himself mainly to historical paintings.

  • Still Life of Bouquet in two-handled vases - Oil on Panel by Vincenzo dé Fiori
    Located in Roma, IT
Still Life is a superb original oil painting on panel, realized by the Italian artist Vincenzino Volò, best-known as Vincenzino dei Fiori (Rémondans, 1620-Milan, 1671) around 1640-1660. Original Title: Natura morta di fiori entro vasi biansati (Still life of Bouquet in two-handled vases). On the back of the panel, two labels are glued "da Milano", "A Piacenza", ("from Milan" "to Piacenza"). The labels indicate a transfer of the artwork, perhaps in the first half of the twentieth century, from Piacenza to Milan. While instead the style and technique make us understand the artwork was commissioned or created in the Milan of Federico Borromeo, archbishop of Milan from1595 to 1630. The author of the painting can be identified in the person of Vincenzo Volò, a talented artist who fell into oblivion, recently rediscovered and appreciated. Founder of the Vincenzini family, he was born in Franche-Comté in 1620 (in the past its birth was erroneously fixed to 1606). In the mid-forties of the seventeenth century he arrived to Milan, and held a leading artistic role: he was the founder of a family workshop that imposed his style and strongly influenced Milanese collecting with his still lifes and influenced generations and generations of painters. Vincenzino also was the first painter of still life to work on the Bella Island for Vitaliano VI Borromeo and collaborated with well-known figure painters such as Francesco Cairo, Scaramuccia, Nuvolone and Fumagalli. As regards the style, the archaic tendency of Lombard painting of still life from the early decades of the seventeenth century is clearly evident, looking at primitivism and the happy schematization of the composition of the artwork. The dating of this artwork could be fixed around the first half of the seventeenth century because it is confirmed by the type of support, a wooden panel, always used by Vincenzino. As for the subject, Volò generally painted bouquets of flowers in two-handled vases placed on transversal planes seen from the front. It is possible to compare this work with other Dei Fiori's artworks: the pair of Flower Vases...

  • Hercules and Omphale, Old Master Painting, Mannerism, Baroque, Mythology, Prague
    Located in Greven, DE
Hercules and Omphale Oil on panel, 52 x 41 cm According to legend, Hercules had to make atonement and became a slave to the Lydian queen Omphale. When she found out who her slave was, she married him. Falling for his mistress and made effeminate by the luxury of court life, the former hero allowed himself to become the laughing stock of the court. He dressed in women's clothes, spun wool and did other women's work, whereas Omphale wore his lion's skin and carried a wooden club. When the time of punishment was over, the hero realised his delusion and left Omphale. So far, the painting could not be clearly assigned to an artist. Nevertheless, it impresses with its fluid and convincing painting, whose colourfulness and conception are reminiscent of the Prague School around Bartholomäus Spranger. This work follows an engraving and an etching made by Michel Dorigny in 1643 after a design by Simon Vouet. It shows the same scene but the print differs in minor details from the present painting (see e.g. the head of the lion) and the treatment of the faces seems to be painted more detailed and refined. So far there is no painting...

  • "Lady in yellow", 19th Century oil on panel by Rogelio de Egusquiza y Barrena
By Rogelio de Egusquiza y Barrena
    Located in Madrid, ES
ROGELIO DE EGUSQUIZA Y BARRENA LADY IN YELLOW signed "R. Egusquiza" (lower right) oil on panel 28-5/8 X 20-3/4 inches (72.5 X 52.7 cm.) framed: 32-5/8 X 24-3/4 inches (82.5 X 62.5 cm.) Rogelio de Egusquiza y Barrena (1845 – 10 February 1915) was a Spanish painter, known for his friendship with the German composer Richard Wagner, whose works he helped make familiar in Spain He was born in El Astillero, into a well-to-do family. He studied in Madrid and with Léon Bonnat at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1868, after travelling and participating several times in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, he returned to Paris and settled there. At first, he painted historical scenes, but later turned to genre scenes and portraits in the Academic style. Following the death of Marià Fortuny, he moved to Rome at the invitation of the Madrazos, Raimundo and Ricardo, taking Fortuny's place at their studio through 1875 and attending classes at the Spanish Academy in Rome. He heard Wagner's music for the first time in 1876, after returning to Paris. Three years later, he travelled to Munich to hear a performance of The Ring of the Nibelungen. His enthusiasm for what he heard led him to go to Bayreuth, where he introduced himself to Wagner and became his friend. In the following years, he and Wagner got together again several times; in Venice (1880), Berlín (1881) and Bayreuth (1882); where he was a guest at the premiere of Parsifal. After his first meeting with Wagner, he decided to devote his career to doing works on Wagnerian themes; mostly portraits of the characters rather than specific scenes. During his visits to Germany, he also created portraits of Arthur Schopenhauer (posthumous) and King Ludwig II...
