2022

About the Item

Yetunde, a reincarnation of the great female ancestors, justice is my legacy, I am queen beautiful and comfortable in my skin, your view about me is not my view about myself, I know my essence in body, chemistry, and soul my ancestors are the queen and brave warriors across lands and history. Thus I embrace myself and all that is there in me. In this captivating artwork, we encounter Yetunde, a powerful embodiment of the great female ancestors who have left an indelible mark on history. As she stands before us, she proudly declares, "Justice is my legacy," a testament to the formidable lineage from which she has arisen. Yetunde exudes regality, proclaiming herself as "queen beautiful and comfortable in my skin." This declaration carries a profound sense of self-assurance, challenging societal norms and expectations. The artwork invites us to reflect on the notion that external perspectives do not define one's true essence. In the artist's portrayal, Yetunde boldly declares, "Your view about me is not my view about myself." This assertion underscores the importance of self-perception, reminding us that true strength lies in recognizing and embracing our worth, irrespective of external judgments. Yetunde is depicted as a harmonious fusion of body, chemistry, and soul. Her understanding of self extends beyond the physical, delving into the depths of her being. "I know my essence in body, chemistry, and soul," she declares, inviting viewers to contemplate the holistic nature of identity. The rich tapestry of Yetunde's ancestry is woven into the artwork, revealing a lineage of queens and brave warriors across lands and history. As she embraces her heritage, Yetunde invites us to do the same—to acknowledge and celebrate the strength and resilience that courses through our veins. In a final, empowering statement, Yetunde declares, "Thus I embrace myself and all that is therein." This encapsulates a profound self-love and acceptance, inspiring viewers to embrace their own identities unapologetically and appreciate the intricate beauty of their existence. "Legacy of Justice: Yetunde, the Resurrected Queen" serves as a visual ode to the strength derived from ancestral roots, the power of self-perception, and the unyielding embrace of one's true self. Through this artwork, we are encouraged to reflect on our legacies and celebrate the multifaceted essence that defines us. About Artist Orioye Bukola, born in 1993 in Osogbo, Orioye is a native of Ekiti State—a graduate of Chemistry from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Trained by Mr. Tope Fatumbi of Topfat Art Gallery; Adamasingba, Ibadan 2019. He is inspired by societal issues and life demands, beauty, culture, and African Spirituality – focusing more on the female gender as a conduit to all else. His philosophy is about simplicity and determination without harm none. Orioye's mind quest has progressed to infused questionings and suppositions in his canvases beyond mere rhetorical aesthetics; (as the trendy atmosphere now seems mostly to suggest). His works speak in metaphors that flow between the past, the present, and the postulation of the future. He probes into relics to unearth anchored reasoning that shares semblances with contemporary happenings. His stylistic sense is inventive of punkish style piles of hair reminiscent of the 80s and discotheques, parted with sharp oblique angles which are reflections of the hard chiseled surfaces of the Yoruba effigies he introduces into his works, seasoned with a strong sense of fashion. Orioye is concerned with African spirituality and how it interfaces with the people's identity, memories, worship, and total well-being. This adaptation of the past to interface with the present and postulate a futuristic nuance is evident in his warm leathered-clad supersonic subjects whose demeanor echoes the Star Trek, UFO, and intergalactic Adour of postmodern Hollywood cinematic periods. This pendulum of interactions between the past, the present, and the futuristic postulations, defines Orioye’s works and lends them a certain direction. The combinations create inquisitiveness for explorations that permeate the borrowed eras, espousing bygone traits of exhumed investigative nuances, memories, identities, and spirituality of bygone cultural epochs. It will be exhilarating to calmly observe the growth of Orioye Bukola’s sojourn in the interpretations of his curious and investigative narratively placed overtures.
