Carol Bennett
"Blue Board" Ink and Oil Woman on a surfboard held up by another woman.

About the Item

"I throw myself into the water almost every day- it grounds me, the body floats and the mind drifts. The "Swimmer series" has followed me over the years, resurfacing and evolving. Presently I'm working on wood, I'm intrigued by wood grain swirling like water and how that ground moves through the swimmer's form”. Carol graduated from the Art Center College of Design in painting. For some 20 years she split her time between her loft in downtown LA and a beach bungalow in Hawaii- satisfying a passion for culture and the ocean's pull. In LA she painted backdrops and billboards and parlayed these skills to create over 100 large public and corporate commissions internationally: Ocean Patterns is a 220 ft installation at the Honolulu Airport and this year found her in a glasmalerei in Germany, creating Trigger Picasso Energy, a 48 ft. stained glass/ photovoltaic solar canopy for the Hawaii State Art Museum Sculpture Garden. Water flows through all her work, large and small. ..."I jump around a lot, every big commission is uncharted territory: I dive in and give it a whirl. I return to my studio refreshed and renewed and swim in that feeling”. The Eisenhauer Gallery has 25 years of experience shipping artwork around the world.

"As an African-American artist in today’s world, I embody the vast differences found in our collective backgrounds. I view them as cultural assets. We are always self discovering and these self discoveries take us in surprising directions. We must gain strength from what we learn from each other as well as listen to that persistent, ever present, intuitive self. The connection of one’s own rich heritage and person growth will travel into the inevitable and critical connection between African Americans and Africa. These connections are rich and very important. They Exist! My work, I hope, will serve as a creative connection between the African diaspora and western culture. It is this connection that cause my creative forces to react." Janice Frame...
