Charles G. Bockmann
'Classical Seated Female Nude', by Charles G. Bockman, Oil on Canvas Painting

About the Item

This 38 x 32 inch painting, is an oil on canvas titled 'Female Nude,' by artist Charles G. Bockmann. The painting depicts a 3/4th portrait of a nude woman who is seated on what appears to be a couch or lounge chair, although it is barely visible and the figure mainly occupies the composition. The woman is positioned just off center, mainly taking up the right half of the canvas. As a 3/4th's portrait, the only part of the woman's body not visible are her lower legs, her knees stopping at the bottom edge of the composition, while her head reaches the top edge of the canvas. Her right arm (left side of canvas), rests on the arm of the couch/chair, with her hand just slightly hanging off the edge, while her left arm hangs naturally by her side. Her hand appears to be resting on the couch that she sits upon, although it is cut off by the bottom right corner of the work. Although she appears to be sitting up straight, her torso bends towards the right just a bit, just as her head tilts to the right, making her appear to be looking towards the bottom right corner of the composition. Her facial demeanor is that of a demure, young woman. Her hair falls over her right shoulder, just below her neck while her left shoulder hides her hair as it falls behind her. Her hair appears to be a shade of blonde, just a bit darker than her skin tone. There is a shadow that is cast on her body, helping to demonstrate the artist's skills in depicting light and contrast as well as accentuate the woman's body and shape. The shadow helps to define the right cheek bone on her face, her breasts, the right side of her torso and her forearm. Bockmann uses a limited color palette for this work; the woman's figure is composed of various shades of tan, while the couch/chair she sits upon is painted blue. The background is painted a dark reddish brown, but with different tones. A lighter more noticeable red fills the background on the right side of the canvas and gets darker towards the left, almost so dark that the red is only barely visible as compared to the right side of the background. The painting is framed with an antique, ornate golden frame. Charles G. Bockmann (20th Century) was active/lived in Pennsylvania.

  • A Pompeian Lady
    By John William Godward
    Located in New Orleans, LA
John William Godward 1861-1922 British A Pompeian Lady Signed and dated "J.W. Godward 1904" (lower right, partially covered by frame) Oil on canvas One of the last and greatest Victorian neoclassical painters, John William Godward is celebrated for his flawlessly executed images of graceful women posed in idealized ancient settings. In this work, entitled A Pompeian Lady, a classical beauty is caught idling in a moment of quiet, solitary reflection. Godward's elegant subjects are depicted with a degree of technical mastery that remains unsurpassed, and the work's dramatic palette, luxurious fabrics and classical vision are all characteristics of his unique take on the neoclassical style. Godward was unmatched in terms of his technical skill and attention to detail. A master of contrasting textures, he paints a diaphanous gown draping against the model’s smooth, milky white skin, which sits against the painstakingly rendered individual hairs of a tiger’s pel. Scintillating color permeates the canvas as well, energizing the otherwise static scene. Each element is given careful attention, and the overall effect is one of both immaculate technique and sensual tactility. Along with his contemporary and mentor, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Godward set the tone for the Victorian neoclassicist movement. He built his career upon creating images of idealized feminine beauty infused with a Greco-Roman-inspired style. Though greatly influenced by Alma-Tadema, Godward distinguished himself through his predilection for the solitary female figure. His fame rose dramatically in the first few years of the 20th century, when the present work was completed, due to the burgeoning strength of the British Empire and the Victorian society’s preoccupation with ancient Rome. To many of the newly affluent, Roman society was, as Iain Gale writes, “a flawless mirror of their own immaculate world.” The sensuality and mystery of Godward’s maidens, combined with his impressive antique backdrops...
