About the Item
Solar creates a scene of a stage performance with the backdrop framed in traditional red curtains. A large sunflower takes the place of the sun and hovers above ocean waves that spill onto the wooden stage floor. On the stage, Keiger depicts a man reading a newspaper and a woman looking out at the waves to represent feminine and masculine energy. They sit on a pile of rocks and a staircase that give the impression of constructed set pieces. To the right, an extinct mastodon stands on a tree trunk podium that bears a window showing a melting glacier.
According to Keiger, he began the painting with the simple idea of depicting a sunflower as the sun, and it eventually evolved into a subtle statement on climate change.

Atlanta-based artist Charles Keiger is best known for his southern gothic and magical realism oil paintings. He constructs each painting with “real-world” elements—trees, flowers, animals, people, etc.—presented in a surreal atmosphere. “It’s ok to smile when you look at my paintings,” says Keiger, “and it’s not necessary to ‘figure it out.’” Through oil and mixed media on wood and canvas, Keiger explores how gesture, design, color, and subtle details can reveal the tremendous depth of human emotion. His goal is to connect with the viewer through universal experience and understanding. Keiger’s work has been featured in multiple one-man and group shows throughout the southeast and in New York City. His work is also included in 200 various private and corporate collections including those of MGM Grand Las Vegas, Joel Katz, and Halle Berry.
