Edward Seago
Clowns and Circus Horse beautifully drawn Watercolour Studies by Edward Seago

1939

About the Item

Edward Seago is a giant of 20th Century British paintings. He was collected by the Queen Mother, the Duke of Edinburgh and he taught King Charles to paint. His work is in numerous worldwide collections and his prices can go to over a hundred thousand for his more sought after works. In the 1930's, Seago like a lot of other artists at that time, for example, Laura Knight and Alfred Munnings became captivated by the Gypsy Travellers and the Circus, he made many paintings and studies and in fact published 2 books in the 30's of this work. This is a delightful study showing the Circus performers and he achieves so much expression with very few strokes of the brush. It is all there to see in the face of the clown and the horse reared up on his back legs, a captivating little study by one of the great draughtsmen of the 20th century.

The image depicts a street scene in 19th century New York in which Henry Bergh rebukes a carter, who is brutalizing his starving horse and making it drag the overloaded wagon. The here depicted Henry Bergh was the son of a German ship builder in New York and with the aid of his small private income, he spent most of his life fighting for laws protecting animals. Over fierce opposition and ridicule he obtained a charter in 1867 from State of New York forming the A.S.P.C.A. (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and in 1875 a similar one covering the prevention of cruelty to children. By 1893 all states had adopted laws based on his original statutes. And the artist, who painted this dramatic scene was Frederick Elmiger (1890-1975), an American illustrator. He frequently produced series - often with historical themes - for the Donald...
