Magic Realism Figurative Artwork, "The Air On A G String" by Evgeniya Golik

2019

About the Item

A 20.5” x 16.5" x 1.5" Magic Realism Figurative Artwork by artist Evgeniya Golik. A certificate of authenticity will accompany the piece upon its purchase or delivery. Evgeniya Golik (also known as Evgola) is a Russian born pop-surrealist based in San Diego, California. Golik graduated Art School at the age of 17, and having studied at the Far Eastern State Technical University in Vladivostok, Russia, Golik graduated and earned her degree in Design and Architecture. In the present moment, she is a full-time fine artist, illustrator, educator. Inspired by the European Renaissance, Russian Orthodox icons, Slavic folklore, fairy tales and modern pop culture (fashion, photography, cinematography, music), Golik’s art combines a classic sensibility within a contemporary setting, something which artist-self defines as ‘Neo-Renaissance’. Using a variety of media, her work joins real world portraiture with imaginative and often surreal narratives to highlight and reveal her subject’s personalities. Golik’s paintings and drawings are doors to a mystical realm, one which showcases a myriad of beautiful human faces and fantastical creatures, that seek to express their secret through esoteric language. Golik has been working notably with The Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA), Museum Of Latin American Art (MOLAA), Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD), New Americans Museum (NAM) and with James Hubbell & Ilan-Lael Foundation (Pacific Rim Park Project). Her art has been exhibited in various Galleries within the USA and Europe, as well as being published and commissioned by private collectors all over the world. "This artwork is my impression of a classical music piece now known as “the Air on a G String”, and dedicated to Johann Sebastian Bach’s work. “The Air on a G String” is an arrangement for the violin made in the 19th Century from the Air of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major. Bach originally wrote the suite for his patron Prince Leopold of Anhalt sometime between the years 1717 and 1723. It only attracted this nickname in 1871 when the German violinist August Wilhelmj (1845-1908) made a violin and piano arrangement of the second movement of this orchestral suite. By changing the key into C major and transposing the melody down an octave, Wilhelmj was able to play the piece on only one string of his violin, the G string. Legend says that at the important performance he had all of his strings broken except for one G string, that’s why he had to make this re-arrangement." - Evgeniya Golik

Artist Statement: In this piece, I wanted to create an environment that on the surface looks lovely: the colors are pretty, and the shapes feel inviting. This piece should give the viewer a sense of peace or hope. But I was also looking to explore an unarticulated sense of fear. The children head to a horizon of nothing. There are no trees, buildings, or any recognizable object. In fact, they are heading to unknown. The unknown can be our greatest fear. The fear of not knowing what is ahead of us can be debilitating, this type of fear can pull you back, keep you where you are. This type of fear can say to you: “It’s a scary world out there, better just stay where you are”. Instead of listening to the fear, these children represent the hope that it takes to continue to move forward relentlessly and resiliently. They are the part of us that represents the courage it takes to do thing in spite of pain, suffering, shame, or guilt. It takes courage...
