Private Collection, Turin. In this same year 1948, during the Venice Biennale, Felice Carena met the Austrian artist Oscar Kokoschka and after this meeting the reciprocal consideration between these two painters became very strong. It’s interesting to underline what the scholar Fabio Benzi wrote about Carena’s art in that period: “the influence of Kokoschka was more than a direct influence, it was a motivation, an impulse to unleash the anguished expression of his art from the formal intellectualisms”. Actually, the transformation of Carena’s pictorial technique began two years earlier, in 1946, as some paintings could demonstrate. “Serenity” (a sketch of this painting was exposed in an exhibition in Turin in 1996) shows that, even if the artist continued to choose classical subjects, his work was interested by the decay of the form and by the expressionist performance of the colour. This fascinating oil painting covered by the divine light of Venice indicates the desire of the artist to reveal the essence of the material and of the colour, through a progressive flaking of the images in a vibrant pictorial paste with bright and flaming tones. A unique piece for dimensions, atmosphere, and balance of the incredible variety of the reds used by the painter. Felice Carena Turin 1879 - Venice 1966 He studies with Giacomo Grosso to the Albertina Academy of Turin and alloy of friendship with exponents of the simbolist area, like the poets Arthur Graf and Giovanni Cena, the critic Enrico Thovez and above all with Leonardo Bistolfi. Winner of national the artistic Pensioner in 1906, he then moves to Rome becoming part in the artistic and intellectual life of the understood one them. In 1910 he has one knows it to the Extension of the Amatori and Cultori which he follows two later years the staff in the within of the Biennial one of Venice; here the artist assembles all the works of the first roman period that conclude the simbolista phase. E' in occasion of the extension of the Secessione between 1913 and 1915 that is opened, through the directed vision, to the influences of the French painting of Cèzanne and Matisse that will renew deeply the language of its painting. The war of 15 -18 marks a period of stasis in its activity. It is moved to Anticoli Corrado with the family, that it will be also later on the place predelight for summery stays; to contact with this world simple peasant and legacy to essential values, the painter returns to the "vero" realizing characterized works to emphasize itself of the plasticity and the constructive values, in which the famous search of one greater constructive solidity and definition of the volumes, demonstrating to have itself assimilated the lesson of Cèzanne. In the first post-war period the Italian artistic climate from a part riscopre the lesson of Cèzanne in the constructive value of the shapes and from the other it is oriented towards a return to the order that sfocierà in the 1900's. Riscopre the classic Italian tradition and the painting of the 400: Masaccio, Piero of the Francesca. Carena in this climate aspires to the great composition of the picture on the model of those antichi, making oneself to drag, like other contemporary artists, from the rhetorical, as it testifies the painting the quiet ones of 1921, considered from anthology for the position that has assumed in the history of art at that time. The free emotion instead in other paintings of this age as Child on the door of the 1919 in which the solidity and constructive compactness they contribute to exalt the expressive intensity, withheld one but load. Between 1922 and 1924 one organizes with to the scultore Attilio Forest school of art near the Sallustiani Gardens; the lessons are attended, between the others, from Emanuele Horses, Giuseppe Capogrossi, the Faustus Pirandello that follow it also in summery stays to Anticoli. In the 1924 it is moved to Florence, where the chair of painting is assigned to it for clear reputation to the Academy of Fine Arts of which it becomes later on director. Its instruction was searched and to its school some of the greater Italian artists of the generation of the first years of the 900 were formed. The intimate friendship with two you notice artists of Florence like Ardengo painter You blow to us and the Free scultore Andreotti, gets passionate to you cultori of the Italian classic art, increased still more in Careens the incantamento for the ancient art, in one prestigious and rich center of suggestions like the city of Florence. Already in the years succeeded you to the Biennial of Venice of 1926 to which it participates with 50 works, Carena addresses towards one greater semplicità; it abandons the academic tone. Famous that attention turned more to the feelings that to the shapes. E' of 1945 the transfer to Venice where it will reside until death. In vent' the veneziano stay years, the series of natures dead women catches up one vibrating emotional intensity and refinement of structure and color.
