Renouard (American, 1884-1954) noted painter, printer and graphic artist. His career spanned more than forty years, between the years of 1914 until his death in 1954. Born in Rochester, NY and later moved to New York City. He studied at the Pratt Institute & Erasmus Hall in Brooklyn, also at the Art Students League, NYC under John Sloan and Mahonri Young. Renouard lived & maintained a studio on the Lower East Side of New York. Renouard’s father became well known for his invention of a type of embalming fluid and was moderately wealthy during this time period. As a result, it afforded George a life of leisure to pursue his passion of painting. Renouard often depicted life among the less fortunate peoples in society such as immigrants, beggars & drunkards, the unemployed, and the poor working class. Many of his works clearly show the love and empathy that he had for his fellow man. He actively painted along the south shore in Brooklyn, Long Island, Staten Island, Vermont, the Catskill Mountains, the Berkshires, as well as Rockport, Massachusetts and its environs. He is well known for his beautiful landscapes, seascapes, portraits, still lifes and nautical themes. He primarily worked in oils, but also worked in watercolor, etching and lithography. Renouard eventually moved from his home in New York City when the city claimed the neighborhood in which he lived, to expand Bellview Hospital. He settled in Baldwin Harbor, Long Island, spending summers in Rockport, Massachusetts. Renouard exhibited works at: The Albany Institute of Fine Art, The American Federation of Arts, the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, the Chicago Art Institute 1936, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts 1938, 15 Gallery NYC 1940 (solo), the National Academy of Design, the National Arts Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Print Club of Philadelphia, the Weyhe Gallery, and the Salmagundi Club. Some of his represented work can be found in the Library of Congress, the Brooklyn Museum and the NY Public Library.
