About the Item

Here for your consideration is a very well executed original oil on board painting by the American artist, George A. Traver. Signed lower right. Signed and titled verso. National Academy of Design exhibition label verso. (1923) Condition is very good; no issues. The painting done in an impressionist style depicting a mother and her child picking wild flowers in a field. A beautiful variety of greens and blues dominate the composition. The figures are painted with a soft white palette are equally well done. The painting has recently been professionally cleaned. The painting is housed in its original wood frame with a hand hammered copper metal wrap over wood. The frame is from the arts and crafts period and is in fine condition. Overall framed measurements are 18.75 by 4.75 inches. Provenance: A Sarasota, Florida collector. In 1864, George Traver was born in Corning, New York. George Traver was working as an artist in New York City by the 1890's. He studied with J. Alden Weir, Henry Siddons Mowbray and Thomas Wilmer Dewing. In 1898, Traver exhibited with the American Watercolor Society (established in 1866, in New York City). This exhibition was held at National Academy of Design. Traver exhibited again at the National Academy of Design in 1900 as well as in 1923 when this painting was exhibited. See label photo) He also exhibited at the Salons of America, in 1925, the Milwaukee Art Institute, in 1928 and at the Art Center, in New York City. Traver was a member of the Salmagundi Club. His paintings have been sold by more than a dozen major auction houses and are in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn and Newark Museums, amongst many other collections.

    Description: Very expressive oil on heavy paper of a man with a large mustache and wearing a white chapeau by Gen Paul. Signed middle right. New silver leaf frame with dark mat and Museum glass. Overall size framed is 25 by 20 inches. Provenance: Private collector, Argentina. Eugene Paul, known as Gen Paul, was born in 1895 and raised in the bohemian atmosphere of Montmartre. In his life he came to know a great many of the artists, from the anonymous to the world famous, who established themselves in the neighborhood. A self-taught artist, Gen Paul began expressing himself in drawings and paintings as a child, his earliest works show a remarkable talent. He was apprenticed to a wallpaper hanger. until his life was interrupted by war. He was wounded twice in World War One, the second time he lost one of his legs. During his recovery he turned to painting, which became his passion and his livelihood for almost 60 years. Gen Paul exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indépendants beginning in 1920. In 1928 Gen Paul exhibited fifty paintings at Galerie Bing with Picasso, Rouault, and Soutine. He participated in collective exhibitions in London and Anvers. In 1937 he painted a large fresco for the Pavillon de Vins de France at l’Exposition Internationale de Paris. A restrospective was held at Galerie Drouant-David in 1952 and his works were shown several times at Galerie Ferrero in Geneva, Switzerland. From the late teens until about 1930 Gen Paul produced a large number of exceptionally strong, vibrant expressionist paintings. Frederick Carl Frieseke was a member of the third generation of American painters to inhabit and find inspiration from Giverny, France. His use of bright colors and light, to depict the female figure, defined the style of the Giverny group during his residence, synthesizing aspects of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Born in the United States, Frieseke studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. In 1898, he moved to Paris to enroll in the Académie Julian, where he studied under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. During this time, Frieseke also briefly studied with James A. Whistler, who would prove to be a great inspiration in Frieseke’s early works. From Whistler, Frieseke adopted a tonalist palette and a decorative approach to figurative painting. Born in Philadelphia in 1875, Martha Walter attended Girls’ High School followed by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It was at the Academy that Walter’s artistic talent was discovered. An admiring instructor by the name of William Merritt Chase took young Martha under his wing, giving her both inspiration and direction. She additionally enrolled with Chase at his summer school in Shinnecock, Long Island and in 1903, was awarded the Cresson Traveling Scholarship by the Pennsylvania Academy. This sent Martha Walter on travels to France, Italy, Spain, and Holland, where she attended the Grand Chaumiere and the Academie Julian in Paris.
