Afternoon Repose
(The Artist's Studio — Antibes)
Signed “Gustave De Jonghe” (lower right)
Oil on canvas
This tranquil and picturesque interior scene was painted by Flemish artist Gustave Léonard de Jonghe. De Jonghe’s mastery of realism is clearly on display, as well as his remarkable ability to create a powerful mood in his compositions. Entitled Afternoon Repose, the oil painting showcases one of the artist’s most beloved subjects: young glamorous mothers and their children.
The composition’s immersive scale invites the viewer into an intimate and restful afternoon in the sitting room with a mother and daughter. The heavy-lidded woman lounges in a carnelian-hued chair, her black lace dress billowing as she takes a break from reading to rest her eyes. Her daughter, donning a pink dress reminiscent of a ballerina’s tutu, also appears sleepy, resting her head upon her dog and gazing toward the viewer. Large leafy plants frame the open window, which offers a remarkable view of a sun-washed cityscape.
The son of a famed landscape painter, Gustave Léonard de Jonghe completed his formal art studies at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. He began his career painting religious and historical scenes in a distinctive Realist style. His later works, which often take glamorous women and mothers and children as their subjects, reflect the contemporary craze for Orientalist painting, especially works of japonisme. A frequent exhibitor at the Salon, he received a third place medal at the Paris Salon of 1863. De Jonghe’s artworks are highly prized by collectors and are found in the permanent collections of prestigious museums worldwide, including the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, the Royal Museum of Fine Art in Brussels and the Cummer Museum in Jacksonville.

- Jeune femme à l’éventail (Young Girl with a Fan)By James TissotLocated in New Orleans, LAConjuring the brilliance of late 18th-century costume with infusions of 19th-century modernity, James Jacques Joseph Tissot’s Jeune femme à l’éventail illustrates the remarkable technique for which he was renowned. His delicate portraiture, combined with his fascination with conveying texture, demonstrates why he was one of the most revered artists of the Belle Époque. Grouped with Tissot’s “keepsake pictures” of beautiful women in fashionable dress, this work is noteworthy not only for the fresh face of its sitter but also for the appearance of some of Tissot’s most beloved props. The delicate fan and paisley cashmere shawl, a favorite prop of Tissot’s artistic idol Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, made frequent appearances in his paintings, as did the exquisite dress the sitter wears. Its identifiable styling can be seen in several of Tissot’s most notable works of the period, including La chéminée and Un déjeuner à la riviere. The playful feel of this painting is grounded by Tissot’s exceptional attention to detail. A master of conjuring an array of textures, Tissot showcased this ability in this composition by juxtaposing many types of fabrics and patterns within one costume. This intricacy, which he carried even to his depiction of the woman’s manicure and jewelry, set him on par with the best artists of his day and contributed to his commercial success. Born in 1836 in the port town of Nantes, Tissot traveled to Paris at the age of 20 in order to join the studios of Hippolyte Flandrin...Category

The curious and brave sly man, despite the consequences, took off his shoes to approach quietly... One can imagine his disappointment and emotions after he accomplished what he had planned... The boy's faithful friend, a small dog, looks at all this with interest and curiosity. Both with their traditionally classic approach to realism, anecdotal undertones and bold use of dark colors, they were the most loved and celebrated illustrators of life and times; often depicting the hardships and trials of that day and age.
