Henri-Joseph Duwez
Alone in the world, Oil on panel by Duwez Henri-Joseph (1810-1884)

19th century

About the Item

Alone in the world Signature on the left Presented in a period frame Provenance: Sold in Paris on February 6, 1895, at Drouot, for 140 Gold Francs (Bénézit) Biography Henri-Joseph Duwez (Also Duwée Henri-Joseph) Apart from his dates of birth and death and the fact that he was active from 1833 to 1870, very little is known about this talented but now almost forgotten painter. He studied under the direction of Jean-François Navez at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. He was an engraver and painter of historical and genre scenes. In his paintings, we often sense a classic style, but executed with a personal touch. Sometimes a painting is defined by a strong chiaroscuro effect, sometimes Duwez paints parts of the canvas with great clarity and detail, leaving other parts blurred, almost sfumato. By thus putting "a focus" on certain parts of the scene, he creates an approximately photographic effect (a bit like certain great masters of photography several decades later) which immediately attracts the viewer's attention. A large painting, Woman with a Tambourine, is part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Signature lower right: J. Bail Relined and some restorations Joseph-Claude Bail was born during a period of intense disagreement in the Parisian art world. For several years the Salon juries had rejected many progressive artists works; printmaking was making a charge at establishing itself as a true art form; the Barbizon group of painters challenged the tradition of historical landscapes with their views of the modern countryside, and Realism was decades old and had brought forth such combative figures as Gustave Courbet. Yet not all artists can be said to belong to this modern view of the nineteenth century. Numerous artists found prestige and public acclaim both at the Salons and with the public with works that relied on past styles and traditions influenced by the “Little Masters” from seventeenth-century Holland and traditions from eighteenth-century France. Joseph Bail...
