Ernst Link (Swiss, ∗ 14th of October, 1874 in Windisch, † 29th of June, 1935 in Bern) Stöckli with Clothesline • Oil painting on canvas approx. 25.5 x 26.5 cm • Pine frame approx. 34.5 x 35.5 cm (obvious signs of age) • Signed lower right A most pleasant depiction of a typical ‘Stöckli’ in bright sunshine with the a few shirts on the washing line, somewhere in the Canton of Berne in Switzerland. Such small cottages would sit next to the large farmhouses and upon retirement the old couple would move into it, to make room for the next generation to take up residence in the main building and run the farm. He then decided to become a full-time artist and painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits/nudes in various styles up to his early death in 1955. Alphons Müller was the proverbial hardworking bohemian artist. He lived in a small cold room above a pup and often struggled to make ends meet. On one hand he would paint commercial views of local beauty spots - often of the Lake of Bienne. These paintings were generally executed using very thin paint layers (to make the expensive material last longer ...) in a very bright impressionist style. On the other hand, he would create intelligent, generous and deep reaching images - especially during the war. Originally an agricultural worker, he later worked as a painter decorator and served as a town hall official in his native Nis. He went on to create frescos, wall paintings and small paintings, which after joining local exhibitions, he exhibited in 1973 in Geneva, Switzerland and in the eighties successfully in Paris, at the Salon International d'Art Naïf.
