A. J. Bennett
A. J. Bennett - Light and Shade - Post Impressionist Painting, South Africa 1919

1919

About the Item

A. J. Bennett (South African, fl. Early 20th century) Light and Shade • Oil on canvas artist board ca. 42.5 x 29.5 cm • Later frame ca. 53.5 x 41 cm Worldwide shipping is complimentary - There are no charges for handling & delivery. I picked up this intelligent post-impressionist painting in the 90’s in at a small auction house in Bath, England – it was one of those impulse buys, which I never regretted. This, for various reasons; for one, the obvious masterly depiction of the various effects of light and shade, cleverly capturing the different light absorbing and reflecting surfaces akin to a still life, then a most pleasing colour palette and as well as the symbolist composition, respectively, the arrangement of the beams. I see two crosses and high above in the bright sunshine a third. Very reminiscent of various old master imagery representing the three crosses on Golgotha. Some people attribute the painting to Alfred John Bennett (British, 1861-c.1923 but I don’t think they are right based on following research – I think we have something more special here. According to the label attached to the back the painting is by A. J. Bennet who created this painting in 1919 and lived at 29, Rosston Drive in Durban, South Africa. Seven years later, 1926 he pops up at the new address 29, Cowey Road in Durban and is listed as having exhibited two of his paintings at the annual National Society of Artists Exhibition of 1926 in Durban (See photos). On 'artefacts' I found a note mentioning an A. Bennett, who was listed working in Johannesburg in 1898/99 and an A.J. Bennett working as an architect in Durban in 1922. It very well possible that this is always the same Bennett – a South African architect who painted. However, this attribution needs to be confirmed by further research, before it can be guaranteed. So, we are left with a good South African School work of art painted in, for its time very modern European (French School) style, with a strong architectural influence and religious symbolism. Not the sort of painting you will see often, whilst perusing South African art from the early 20th century. As far as I can tell, the painting has not been touched and has the usual various minor/minuscule scuffs and scratches , but nothing which would offend the viewer’s eye or warrant restoration. The vintage shabby-chic solid oak frame was probably added some 50 years ago by the previous owner and might have been cut and sanded down from an older, pre-used frame, as there are traces of gesso and gilding here and there. All I did, is gave it a wax an polish. I think the natural wood tones of the frame, match the earthy colour palette of the painting and the wood grain picks up beautifully on the cross-beams in the painting. Alphons (Alfons) Müller (Swiss, * 24.8.1898 Mitlödi, † 8.6.1955 Biel) ' Im Häfeli ' The small harbor at the Lake of Biel / Bienne in Switzerland • Oil on artist board, ca. 47 x 38 cm • Frame, ca. 54 x 45 cm • Signed bottom right Alphons Müller lived and worked in the watch industries in Biel/Bienne in Switzerland up to about 1933. He then decided to become a full-time artist and painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits/nudes in various styles up to his early death in 1955. Alphons Müller was the proverbial hardworking bohemian artist. He lived in a small cold room above a pup and often struggled to make ends meet. On one hand he would paint commercial views of local beauty spots - often of the Lake of Bienne. These paintings were generally executed using very thin paint layers (to make the expensive material last longer ...) in a very bright impressionist style. On the other hand, he would create intelligent, generous and deep reaching images - especially during the war. In the late thirties he meets his two loyal patrons, the baker Werner Gass and the pharmacist...
