About the Item
Orientalist watercolour by Stephanoff of a Middle Eastern scene
English, 1855
Paper: Height 22cm, width 30cm
Frame: Height 45cm, width 51.5cm, depth 3cm
This expertly rendered watercolour painting depicts a scene set in the Middle East. A Sultan figure enters the scene from the right, seated atop an elegant white horse and dressed in a lavish Orientalist fashion. He gestures towards a young woman, who seems to be being offered to him by a man in the centre. The woman immediately catches the attention of the viewer, standing out from the crowd with her pale skin, delicate features, and light-toned clothing. The exchange is watched by an attentive crowd, who react with varying responses. Each figure in the scene is imbued with a strong sense of character, drawing the viewer into the dynamism of the scene.
Further Orientalist references can be seen in the Middle Eastern architecture, as well as the large, ornately decorated mosque which dominates the background of the scene.
The painting is signed in the lower left-hand corner ‘J. Stephanoff 1855’. A skilled watercolourist, the artist James Stephanoff (1784-1874) specialised in historical reconstructions, and in 1830 was appointed the historical painter in watercolours to King William IV. His work is now housed in several notable public collections including the British Museum.
This dynamic watercolour scene is rendered with impressive technique, and would make an excellent addition to a collection of Orientalist art.

- Art Nouveau Portrait of Redhaired Lady Watercolor by French Master BrisgardLocated in Stockholm, SESigned lower left "G. Brisgard" (Gustave Joseph Marie Brisgand, 1867 - 1944). This stunning portrait of a supposedly young movie star captures the essence of old school glamor in the film industry (perhaps old Hollywood...). Dressed in a beautiful stage gown, she holds an intricately patterned box close to her heart. What treasures could be inside? Perhaps precious jewelry or heartfelt letters from a special someone. Who knows... One thing is certain, this box holds great value to her. In 1993, this painting was entitled “Le Secret”, it was masterly executed in early 20th century in the manner of Pre-Raphaelites with strong flavor of Art Nouveau though. Size app.: 71 x 52.5 cm (roughly 28 x 20.7 in), frame is 94.5 x 75.5 cm (roughly 37.2 x 29.7 in). Appears to be in very good pristine condition with minimal wear to painting (slight discoloration by spots), ready to hang. Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 3.6 kg is going to measure 7 kg packed for shipment. Brisgand's, french painter and pastellist. An academic painter, he specialized in portraits of women (pinups) and female nudes.
