Jean-Frank Baudoin
Les îles d'Herblay. Oil French Postimpressionist panoramic. An isle on the Seine

About the Item

Postimpressionist panoramic view of Les Îles d'Habrey on the Seine, in the Val-d'Oise. Author: Jean-Frank Baudoin (France 1870-1961). Measurements: (H) 60 x (W) 81 x (D) 2 cm. Framed: (H) 70 x (W) 91 x (D) 5 cm Jean Frank Baudoin chooses this beautiful small isle that can only be reached by boat (in whose western part it includes another island: the old island of Motteau) to depict a beautiful panoramic view of a mythical place among the artists of his time. With loose brushwork and appropriate touches of color, the author manages to convey the serenity of a luminous aquatic landscape, where the isle, nowadays a sanctuary of diversity, becomes the protagonist. In 1880 the Île d'Haubrey was bought by two French artists who used it as an open-air photographic studio in such a way that its landscapes, occupied by wild vegetation, became decorations for their photographs (most of them nude portraits), images that have been part of French Pictorialism ever since. ABOUT THE ARTIST Jean-François Baudoin (1870 -1961) was one of the last great French post-impressionist painters. This painting shows his characteristic easy brushstroke, flirtation with light and colour and mastery of composition. Jean-François Baudoin, a wood engraver and painter of the society of French Artists, died on the 20th January 1961 at Libourne ‘Gironde’ at the age of 91. He was born at Saint Martin De Re on the 26th August 1870 in a protestant family. He was the son of a sculptor and therefore woke up very early to an artistic life. His family supported his talent and sent him to Paris to live with his uncle. He was the student of ‘Trupheme’, a Director at the Superior Class of Drawing in Paris whom he also studied with Rousseau, Bouguereau, Robert-Fleury, Baschet, and Royer. His family bought him a hotel at Montparnasse in order to help support him. Having won awards for his work of wood engraving exhibited at the exhibition between 1888-1896 Jean-Franck Baudoin turned to paint. It was in the Ile de Re (his place of birth) where his family was refuged during the war of 1870, that the artist mostly used his easel. Read Less

  • "Boulevard of Paris", 20th Century oil on canvas by Spanish artist E. Grau Sala
    By Emilio Grau Sala
    Located in Madrid, ES
EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 BOULEVARD OF PARIS signed Grau Sala (lower right) oil on canvas 25-1/2 X 32 inches (65 X 81 cm.) framed: 36-1/4 X 42-1/2 inches (92 X 108 cm.) PROVENANCE Sale: Sotheby´s Olympia London, 20 October 2006 Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. In this work Grau Sala has a loose, subtle brushstroke, in which the color shapes the entire work. The bright and transparent whites that give life to young schoolgirls contrast with the brushstrokes of blacks from the nun who accompanies them. The explosion of greens is refreshing, it surrounds us and transports us to an idyllic place, even if it is a citizen boulevard, which becomes friendly and beautiful. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...
