Jean Rose
The Flower Shop

late 20th century

About the Item

The Flower Shop Girl by JEAN ROSE B. 1933 Oil on board, signed, 24 x 27 cm Jean Rose was one of the first women students at Corsham, Bath and worked under some of the postwar ‘lions’ such as Kenneth Armitage, Clifford Ellis and William Scott. She, however, drew on the French interior painters such as Vuillard, developing a dry, textural technique that builds the fabrics of interior views adroitly. Married to another artist, Jasper Rose, he and Jean worked in Cambridge and were founding members of the Cambridge Society of Painters bringing an active knowledge of the European schools with them; Jasper studied at Kings College and later they moved to USA where Jean had several exhibitions in Los Angeles, she also exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery and The Portal Gallery in London.
