Jan Hendrick Neuman, also known as Johan Heinrich Neuman, was born in Cologne, Germany in 1818 to Schoonhoven, Netherlands merchant Gerrit Neuman (1785-1859) and Henriette Cornelia Nahuijs (1795-1844) from Schoonhoven. Neuman eventually moved to the Netherlands where he studied art at the Royal Academy Of Art in Amsterdam with Louis Henri de Fontenay, Jan Adam Kruseman and Nicolaas Pieneman.
In 1849 Neuman became a member of the Dutch artists society "Arti et Amicitiae." Arti et Amicitiae was founded in 1839, and has played a key role in the Netherlands art scene, and in particular, in the Amsterdam art schools.
Neuman went on to display his art at the "Exhibition of the Living Masters", as well as at the exhibition in Rotterdam, where he displayed his portrait miniatures. He married Aletta Catharina Petronella Elisabeth Theunisz in 1850. From this marriage the future painter Clasina Carolina Frederika Neuman (1851–1908) was born.
Neumans art career consisted primarily of portraits, genre paintings, lithography, and miniatures, which were usually made on ivory.
Johan Heinrich Neumans' art has been displayed around the world, and is currently on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam alongside Rembrandt and Van Gogh.
