This artwork "Man Dancing with Birds" c.1970 is an oil painting on canvas by noted French artist Jovan Obican, 1918-1986. It is signed at the lower left corner by the artist. The canvas size is 28 x 22 inches, framed size is 33.5 x 27.5 inches. Custom framed in a wooden gold frame. It is in excellent condition, the frame has a few minor small dents. See pictures #8/9/10 for detail
About the artist:
Jovan Obican was born in Cannes, France, of Yugoslavian parents. From childhood on, Jovan practically devoted himself to art, scratching designs on mud pies when paper was unavailable. He trained with many recognized teachers with many styles. He finished his training, imbued with the spirit of his native country, the people, their legends, and their philosophy. It has been said that his work has a "timeless quality" and a naive, child-like primitive style. Obican is identified with his style the world over, a style that is simple yet sophisticated; child-like yet masterfully adult; a style that tells a story with psychological, philosophical or sociological overtones. His funny little people are always colorful, full of spirit, living with music and birds to bring them happiness. His fans and collectors are legion and include some of the most famous names in the world including American presidents, senators, ambassadors, film stars and European nobility. He has exhibited all over the world and is represented in many galleries and collections. Jovan Obican always had a tremendous following of collectors and became internationally known by word of mouth and his frequent invitations to display his works in the USA and Europe. His studio, in Dubrovnik, was a well-visited place, and an attraction to collectors, art enthusiast, and tourist. Jovan Obican was encouraged by friends to add more Jewish influence to his work and in the mid-1960s he began reading books about the tradition and history of the Jewish people.

Custom framed in original dark brown and gold distressed frame, with fabric liner and gold color fillet. It is in excellent condition, the frame have minor restorations, practically invisible. About the artist. Self-taught painter of figurative painting. At eleven years old, it was the Great War and his Certificate of Studies in his pocket, he first worked in the fields of the village farms, then until he was 17, he was employed at the Coeuvres distillery where he is responsible for the proper functioning of the machines. In 1925 he did his military service at the barracks of St Vincent de Laon (Aisne) in the 101st heavy artillery regiment as a pointer brigadier, and he was already drawing on notebooks. At the end of his service, having chosen to go to Paris to take drawing and painting lessons, he became a cashier at the Grand Magasins du Louvre. He begins to discover Paris, its districts, its buildings, shops, churches. During the week he sets up his easel on the sidewalks of Montmartre, Notre Dame, where the Latin Quarter and on Sundays, he sells these paintings on Boulevard Raspail. He took part in the Battle of France in September 1939at june 1940. He testifies in a notebook of the events and emotions he has gone through. After the Second World War, he set up his home and studio in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, but he remained very attached to his native village where he went very regularly. Married, he takes his family almost every summer to the Côte d'Azur where he paints with great pleasure the warm colors and the intense light of the Esterel or the Var coast. He participates in many Parisian salons and exhibitions in Paris and province. Awarded at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in 1961, as well as at the Salon Violet in Paris. From 1967, Mrs. Rosenthal of the Galerie Haussmann (Paris), regularly exhibited her works on "Old Paris" which particularly appealed to British and American tourists.
