JUAN GIMÉNEZ MARTÍN Spanish 1855 - 1901 THE MANDOLIN SERENADE signed & located "Gimenez-Martin, Roma" lower left watercolour on cardboard 21-1/4 x 15-1/2 inches (54 x 39 cm.) unframed PROVENANCE Private Collection, Madrid Juan Giménez Martín was born in 1855 in Adanero (Ávila). He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid where he was a disciple of Federico de Madrazo, Carlos Luis de Ribera and Carlos de Haes. In 1881, he requested a pension from the Ávila Provincial Council. He settled in Rome enjoying a scholarship from 1882 to 1886, forming part of the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. There he made a precious work of Fortune influence (Mariano Fortuny) and orientalist. During his stay in Italy he visits Florence, Naples and Venice where he will dedicate himself to landscape painting. Upon his return from Rome, he sent the painting Doña Jimena Blázquez to the Ávila Provincial Council, as an intern. Established in Spain, he attends the National Fine Arts Exhibitions: In 1876, with his work "Estudio del Natural". In 1878, with his work "Lady helping her son on the beach". In 1881, with his work "The presentation of Rinconete y Cortadillo a Manipondio". In 1895, he received the Honorable Mention with his work "Tocador de una dama romana", oil on canvas, (0.85 x 1.46), held at the Palace of Arts and Industries in Madrid. It can be seen in the Congress of Deputies of Madrid, granted in 1904 by the Museum of Modern Art. Honorable Mentions in 1897 and 1899 respectively. In 1901, he received the Third Medal with his work "Interior of the Cathedral of Ávila", oil on canvas (1.04 x 1.40). Other works of this author of great interest are: In the garden, Masked ball, and Lady reading a letter. He died in Madrid in 1901.
