Signed oil on canvas figures in landscape circa 1950 by French impressionist painter Jules Rene Herve. The work depicts several children dressed in summer clothes playing in a sandpit on a park. There is a bucket and ball in the foreground and beyond the sandpit two older girls in which summer dresses sit on a green park bench in the shade of the bushes. Signature: Signed lower left & again verso Dimensions: Framed: 42"x35" Unframed: 36"x29" Provenance: Private collection - United States. Jules René Hervé (French, 1887-1981) was an Academic painter, born in Langres. Known for his paintings of cityscapes and landscapes, Hervé painted in an impressionistic style that captured the shimmering texture of the city and the softer light of the countryside. Hervé was trained at the Ecole nationale supérieure d'arts decoratifs of Paris, and studied with Fernand Cormon (French 1845-1924) and Jules Adler (French, 1865-1952). As early as 1910, his work was shown in Paris Salons where his paintings were described as "jewels" of French scenery. Hervé was awarded multiple honors during his lifetime, including a golden medal at the Universal Exhibition 1937. His work is included in collections of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, and the Chicago Art Institution the Musée de la Ville de Paris.
