Karl Harald Alfred Broge
'Piano And Violin Recital', Paris Salon, Royal Academy, Still Life of Tulips

1918

About the Item

Signed lower left, 'Alf. Broge' for Carl Harald Alfred Broge (Danish, 1870-1955) and dated '1918'. Alfred Broge first studied with Helger Gronvold and, from 1889 to 1891, at Denmark's Royal Academy under Rudolf Bissen. He initially achieved recognition for a series of sunlit summer landscapes before embarking on a long and successful career as a figural and genre painter. With all his subjects, however, Broge showed consistent interest in the subtle and nuanced effects of light within the composition. Additionally, as in the case of this present work, he was a master of developing atmospheric intensity through the subtle use of chiaroscuro. Over the course of a long and successful career, he painted and exhibited with success throughout Europe and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. (Paris Salon, 1922-1926; Charlottenborg, 1892; Aarhus 1909. Danish Art Union, 1921; Bergenholz, 1923 etc.). Alfred Broge is listed in all relevant art reference works including Benezit's Dictionary of Painters and Thieme-Becker's Lexicon of Artists. Reference: E. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs, Jacques Busse, 1999 Nouvelle Édition, Gründ 1911, Vol. 2, p.833; Thieme-Becker Allgemeines Lexikon der Bildenden Künstler von der Antike bis zu Gengenwart, Ulrich Thieme and Felix Becker, Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag 1992, Vol. 5, p. 50; Weilbach, Dansk Kunstnerleksikon, Copenhagen; et al.
