About the Item

The fire that destroys is what gold passes through to become more beautiful"; this is the same way I see the use of burnt papers as a medium in my work. Fire refines, hence I use it as fuel for making meaning out of the years I have spent in uncertainty. In My work, burnt paper makeup the clothes, faces, and backgrounds. As an artist, it is my desire to fan hope, freedom, love, and peace in the heart of my audience. I want to show the world the importance of art in everyday activities. I want to communicate the vast ideas within me waiting to be released to the world. I am looking forward to making the world a better place using my artistic expression. (Written by the Artist) Painting Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, this is not a print or other type of copy. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Like the Westerns I grew up with, my own work is camouflaged in a veil of nostalgia. The figures in my work are often portrayed against a stark background. This forces the viewer to recognize the myth before the critique exposes itself. I work from observation and my imagination using watercolor and traditional printmaking methods. The figurative images I create are heavily researched. By using the West, a subject that I am both familiar with and continue to question, I aim to engage with our inherent perceptions of the past and the myths embedded within. - Jed Webster Smith
