Acrylic, Color pencil, on Washi (Japanese handmade paper) over wood panel.
Brooklyn-based Japanese artist Masaya Nakayama creates work by wrapping wooden panels with Washi (Japanese handmade paper) followed by “drawing” with a special painter's tape. After covering the panels with a mix of acrylic, colored pencil, and gold leaf, Nakayama pulls up the tape to reveal his motif.
The artist’s current body of work details his life in the USA as an immigrant on the path to citizenship. He centers on iconic images with themes representing what the artist equates with American culture through the lens of an artist of color living in New York. With a new life in the dynamic borough of Brooklyn, Nakayama developed his unique painting style drawing upon the energy of the city.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Masaya Nakayama was born in 1983. He is a graduate of the Osaka University of Arts, Department of Fine Arts Painting (2005). Since relocating to the USA he has worked extensively with Brooklyn Brewery, based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, producing creative assets such as a mural, the company’s logo for the Japanese market, and product design.

- Last Light on the San JuansLocated in Denver, COLike the Westerns I grew up with, my own work is camouflaged in a veil of nostalgia. The figures in my work are often portrayed against a stark background. This forces the viewer to recognize the myth before the critique exposes itself. I work from observation and my imagination using watercolor and traditional printmaking methods. The figurative images I create are heavily researched. By using the West, a subject that I am both familiar with and continue to question, I aim to engage with our inherent perceptions of the past and the myths embedded within. - Jed Webster SmithCategory
