Natasha Lelenco
Contemporary Pop Surrealist Portrait. Doll with Vegetal Motifs. "Octombrina"

2021

About the Item

Crafted as an accumulation of representations of floral elements surrounding an inverted face of a plastic doll, this unique piece by Natasha Lelenco is simultaneously an anthropomorphic portrait, a floral composition, and a still life. The starting point is the visual recovery of a lost doll from the author's childhood, her favorite doll, which she had baptized as "octombrina" in reference to the month of October, when the author was born, and also to the national significance that the month of October held in Soviet Moldavian popular culture regarding the October Revolution. The artwork reflects on the circumstantial and anecdotal nature of cultural and historical narratives, as well as on the ephemeral as something shared by the natural and the cultural and political realms. Lelenco's "Fetiches" series melds portraiture and anthropomorphic forms, achieved through a meticulous accumulation of elements. These elements intertwine with a nuanced thematic exploration, touching upon both kitsch and popular iconography. The series also delves into the inseparable connection between humanity and the larger living community. Drawing from her personal biography, Natasha Lelenco constructs a dialogue between memory and imagery. Through a skillful process, she resurrects fragments of her past to craft fresh narratives that challenge conventional perceptions of existence. This narrative depth, coupled with psychological complexity, echoes classical influences, seamlessly bridging the gap between Renaissance portraiture and contemporary expression. Notably, Lelenco's "Fetiches" series echoes the artistic echoes of Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo. This piece is crafted on a wooden board and functions as a standalone artwork without needing to be framed. Natasha Lelenco's art has been showcased across exhibitions in Spain, Germany, Denmark, Portugal, Mexico, and beyond. More than 40 works of these series has found its home in private collections worldwide. Elevate your collection with the enigmatic allure of Natasha Lelenco's artistry – a reflection of the past interwoven with contemporary sensibilities.
