Oliver Hazard Benson
Amlodi's Nightmare, - Highly Detailed Surrealist, Original Painting on Panel

2021

About the Item

This is a version of the Renaissance motif known as "Death and the Maiden". I think the motif generally was meant to condemn Voluptus (born of the unsanctioned union of Cupid and Psyche) but I use it in a different sense. Here the maiden is the immortal Spirit, the union with which is the undoing of Death. There are added elements in the form of the Isis-Osiris-Set-Horus drama (which Shakespeare retold as "Hamlet"). The foundational theme is the interplay of life and death. The woman tempts- maybe mocks or teases- the figure of Death: Isis tempts Set who murders Osiris, Horus kills Set, Isis resurrects Osiris. Additionally there is the Oedipal element strongly associated with Hamlet: The son desires his mother and derives his power from her: the most ancient religious cults seem to have had the Mother goddess married to her son, the throne belonged always to the queen and the crown passed to her consort. The word "Isis" here contains further meanings. "Is" and "is" are a double, referring something that exists twice, in the form of twins or in sequence (life followed by life again). The theme of twinning is obvious Osiris and Set are twin brothers, Hamlet's father and the murderous uncle are brothers. There are two skeletons depicted in this painting. The theme of sequential reproduction is that of the new king following the old- the replacement of Osiris by his son Horus or, separately, the resurrection of Osiris. All of these transformations are under the power of Isis or IS IS! Oliver Hazard Benson Amlodi's Nightmare acrylic on panel 16h x 12w in 40.64h x 30.48w cm OB0128 Oliver Hazard’s paintings are produced directly from his imagination and deals with a mixture of imagery he has witnessed in his travels, dreams, and read about in literature. The artist is influenced by Taoism and European occultism, especially the movements of the late 19th and early 20th century. Hazard is also inspired by Surrealism and the Viennese school of Fantastic Realism imagery as well as the technique and practice of old Tibetan painting and that of Renaissance Europe. His imagery comes from his imagination within and doesn't rely on specific models whether visual, literal or otherwise cultural; but also does not avoid the appearance of recognizable figures (such as a specific god or goddess) should one of them appear.
