About the Item
Vintage American colorful kitschy realist painting of women at the beach with a boat by well listed artist Phillip R. Perkins. Framed, oil on board.
Born in a small town in Illinois, Philip R. Perkins became a painter widely acknowledged for his post-war style painting. He used flattened planes and black outlines to form landscapes and figures very much in the style of Paris artist Bernard Buffet.
Perkins studied at the Chicago Art Institute from 1926 to 1931. In 1932 he moved to Paris, France and studied with Jean Marchaud and Louis Marcoussis until 1934. He continued his studies from 1934 to 1937 with Fernard Leger. In 1934 he exhibited his work at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuilleries in Paris, France.
Philip R. Perkins left Paris in 1940 and moved to New York City where he shared a studio with Surrealist artist Yves Tanguy until 1945. He had solo Exhibitions at the Marquie Gallery, New York in 1944, 1946 and 1947. In the later part of 1947 Perkins moved back to Paris, France and participated in the International Surrealist Exhibition, at the Galerie Maeght.
In 1951 Philip R. Perkins moved back to New York City and held an exhibition at the Samuel Kootz Gallery. He was then represented in Chicago and Florida after that exhibition by the well-known Oehlschlaeger Galleries from the early 1950,s thru 1960's.
