Same Tune, Different Drummer: abstract painting w/ found objects, military items

2002

About the Item

"Same Tune Different Drummer" is an acrylic collage painting with photograph portraits and a number of found objects integrated into the painting such a as military reference such as drums, guns, bullets, American flags, and imagery referencing American history. This painting "collects fragments from the artist's everyday life -- discarded objects found on the streets of Philadelphia that are saved and later repurposed to germinate an idea." Signed and dated by the artist. Already framed (with a second frame collaged into the work). All hanging hardware included and ready to install on your wall. "Most of my works are supported by memories of the past and suggested realities. Issues of social politics, ancestral references, and astral projections are presented with fragmented elements of 'real life' collaged and collapsed, as dreams are prone to do. If connections are made, all the better. I feel that life should remind us of our dreams." - Richard J. Watson Richard J. Watson is an icon in the Philadelphia art world. Much of his work relates to his experiences as a Black African American man. He is a graduate of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1968), has taught at his alma mater, and has served in the Exhibitions Department at the African American Museum in Philadelphia since the 1980s. He has been exhibiting his work for decades, and has an extensive bibliography. His work is held in the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Uniworld Corporation; Sony; the Federal Reserve Bank; the City of Philadelphia; Sprint; the Church of the Advocate; the poet Dr. Sonia Sanchez; and the Woodmere Museum of Art, among many others. • Contemplating Cultural Restoration, Fillipus Sheehama, charcoal & acrylic paint
    By Fillipus Sheehama
    Located in Windhoek, NA
Contemplating Cultural Restoration, 2021. Mixed media: charcoal and acrylic paint on Fabriano Fillipus Sheehama's latest large-scale sculptural textiles have grown out of an exploration of recycled materials and their link to overconsumption. The materials are sourced from under-maintained and largely impoverished areas of Namibia. His artistic process has evolved to incorporate organic waste materials. Indigenous makalani fruits are often used as a food source and to brew alcohol. In these works the discarded makalani piths are cut in half and hand-stitched together alongside flattened metal bottle caps and shards of animal bone. The use of these discarded materials also points to the agricultural processes that sustain subsistence farmers. Sheehama highlights issues of land (re)distribution as years of Apartheid and colonialism carved up and cut off access to much of the arable land in Namibia, leaving the majority of the population scrambling for resources. The patchwork of different materials and textures speaks to the segregation of land and people, and the need to use our natural resources and knowledge to unify for a more just and fair society. Each artwork is both a reflection of society as well as a critique of contemporary living. He is preoccupied with ideas of wholeness, thinking about the relationship between individual and collective identity. The materials he chooses to use en masse- discarded bottle tops, plastics, old school desks...
