Olympia. Custom made gold leaf frame. Scott Bennett was born in 1951 in Newton, New Jersey, contemporary artist from the East Coast he has been painting for over 40 years. Working with oil to acrylic paint and from landscape to abstract expressionist painting. Exhibition Alexander / Heath Contemporary NY 2015 SELECTED BIOGRAPHY 1976 Painting selected for Syracuse Biennial. Juror: Clement Greenberg 1977 Painting selected for the juried exhibit (Silvermine Show, New Canaan, CT) and awarded prize by Clement Greenberg. 1980 Meets critic and writer Clement Greenberg. 1985 Selected by Clement Greenberg for exhibit in a curated group show at Skidmore College. 1988,89 Adjunct Instructor, Painting, University College, Syracuse University. 1986 Attends Triangle International Artists Workshop, Pine Plains, New York. Founder: Anthony Caro, Guest Painter: Larry Poons, Guest Critic: Michael Fried. Painter Friedl Dzubas visiting artist. 1990 Landscape becomes main focus of work after sixteen years of painting abstract pictures. Becomes Technical Consultant with Golden Artist Colors. 1994 Selected for exhibition in a historical review of landscape painting in Central N.Y. at the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, N.Y. Curator: Tom Piche Visiting Artist, the State University of New York at Oswego. October. 1995 Visiting Artist, College of Visual Arts, St. Paul, Minnesota. September. 1996 Publishes limited edition prints from botanical watercolors that have been ongoing since 1974. 1997 Visits Florence, Siena, and Rome for the first time. It begins painting still life in addition to the landscape. 1998 Daughter Sarah is born. Illustrations published in a book on Carnivorous Plants 1999 Visiting Artist in Japan.Tokyo University of the Arts, among others. Visits Osaka, Tokyo, Nara, Kyoto, and Oita. 2000 Continues making painterly representational pictures with expanded subject matter: Garden, close up views of Tree Trunks, Still Life, and Figures. Much success with single object compositions: Plates, bowls, vases, tree trunks, which relates to certain past abstract works. 2005 Included in a historically important two-part exhibition, “Clement Greenberg in Syracuse, Then and Now”, May - June at The Company Gallery, Syracuse, NY. Curated by Karen Wilkin. “Now” part of the show goes to NYC, September - October of 2006. Documentary Film made to accompany the exhibit, called The Mirror Eye, by J.R. Hughto. 2006 Focuses on“Tree Portrait” pictures. The format and subject matter is enormously freeing and seems to enable a melding of abstract and representational aesthetic concerns that have been part of my work for many years. 2007 2008 2009,10 2011 2012,15 2015, Works on Tree pictures, Landscapes, and a return to making Non-Objective pictures. Visiting Artist, Southern Indiana University The discipline of making both abstract and representational pictures enables cross-fertilization that invigorates both bodies of work. Adjunct Professor, Painting, Syracuse University Porch Series begins and proves very fertile territory. It begins combining poured paint with a thicker palette knife and brush applications. Again, borrowing from methods used in making non-objective works. Moves home and studio to 4-acre property outside Syracuse, NY. The woods, fields, and views surrounding the house inspire a new landscape paintings. New landscape paintings synthesizing and hybridizing influences of early American Modernism with Color Field painting. Continues making new non-objective pictures called Carve-Outs. Running with hill and mountain formats. Sometimes more referential and other times very abstracted. Begin color band type. Hybrids.
