About the Item
The legendary and beloved Selina Trieff has been represented by the Berta Walker Gallery since it opened. She studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and remained a cherished outer Cape artist throughout her life.
Over the centuries, great portrait painters have succeeded at reflecting more than just a particular face, but rather the face of the human condition. In the tradition of Jean-Antoine Watteau and Diego Velasquez, Trieff's paintings of faces and figures belie a profound understanding of the whimsy and mystery of being human. Her often autobiographical gold-leaf and oil portraits of figures create a riveting tension between the past and the present, joy and melancholy, male and female, and animal and human.
There could not be a painting that better represents Trieff in her themes, her painstaking execution, her materials, or her soaring vision than Byzantine Women. This painting features the faces and figures (it’s been suggested that they are self-portraits by proxy), composition, and use of gold leaf that became hallmarks of Trieff’s work. This modestly-sized painting on canvas with gold leaf stands with the best work in the late artist’s catalog.
