About the Item
Antique oil on canvas painting depicting Venus and Adonis.
The painting depicts in a sublimated atmosphere the death of Adonis, the young man loved by Venus, who was mortally wounded by a wild boar during a hunting trip.
The myth, taken from Book X of Ovid's Metamorphoses, relates that Venus, as soon as she hears Adonis' dying lament in the distance, descends to earth on her chariot drawn by swans to assist him.
Venus is depicted lying next to her dying beloved, their sinuous bodies close together seeming to merge in final grief, their tapering hands and long fingers drawing the despair of the moment, while the hunter's dog mournfully witnesses the tragic denouement.
