About the Item
French school of the late 18th century
Jerome PREUDHOMME (Attributed to) Arras, v1735 - Paris, 1810 Oil on canvas 47.5 x 55 cm (59 x 67 cm with the frame) Beautiful old carved wooden frame
This is a decorative panel probably for a private house where it was to fit into a woodwork. If the theme is classic - vestals who maintain the sacred fire, the taste for the decorative vegetation around, the colors and the taste for movement and arabesques reminds the art of the late 18th century french artists. It is mentionned on an old stamp at the verso "Paul Prud'hon", the french neoclassical painter but this does not fit with the style of our painting. But this artist has been often confused with Jérôme Preudhommeof the 18th century. The painter style is very different but his style is recognizable by its range of very frank colors with always the same yellow, pink, blue and green. And with his round faces and his way of painting between a rustic style - influenced by the nordic art - and a historical and classical style, so french. Born in Arras in the North of France, Jérôme Preudhomme arrived in Paris in 1761. He was received in 1773 as a “master painter by experience” at the Académie de Saint-Luc in Paris and exhibited there in 1774. Appointed professor in Paris, he was then appointed in 1784 professor of the Saint-Quentin royal drawing school founded in 1782 by Maurice Quentin-Latour. Painter of history, Preudhomme was also a painter of genre and landscapes. Moreover, often dated rather late, these paintings were undoubtedly executed when religious orders diminished after the Revolution. For example, the Fantasy Landscape which was on sale at Christie's London in 2013 is dated 1800.

- Hercules and Omphale, Old Master Painting, Mannerism, Baroque, Mythology, PragueLocated in Greven, DEHercules and Omphale Oil on panel, 52 x 41 cm According to legend, Hercules had to make atonement and became a slave to the Lydian queen Omphale. When she found out who her slave was, she married him. Falling for his mistress and made effeminate by the luxury of court life, the former hero allowed himself to become the laughing stock of the court. He dressed in women's clothes, spun wool and did other women's work, whereas Omphale wore his lion's skin and carried a wooden club. When the time of punishment was over, the hero realised his delusion and left Omphale. So far, the painting could not be clearly assigned to an artist. Nevertheless, it impresses with its fluid and convincing painting, whose colourfulness and conception are reminiscent of the Prague School around Bartholomäus Spranger. This work follows an engraving and an etching made by Michel Dorigny in 1643 after a design by Simon Vouet. It shows the same scene but the print differs in minor details from the present painting (see e.g. the head of the lion) and the treatment of the faces seems to be painted more detailed and refined. So far there is no painting...Category
