About the Item

Vladan Stiha: 1908-1992. Well listed New Mexico artist with auction records over $12,000. He was born in Yugoslavia and tried to emigrate to the U.S. during WW11 but could not get in. He settle in South America until he was in his early 60s. Finally he settled in New Mexico. He had his own gallery at the historic La Fonda Hotel. He painted in the impressionistic style of some of the earlier Taos masters. This spectacular piece is oil on canvas measuring 20 inches wide by 16 high. Frame measures 26 1/4 by 22 1/4. Rare opportunity to own one of his finest paintings with the subject matter you want in a Stiha.

Born in Philadelphia in 1875, Martha Walter attended Girls’ High School followed by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It was at the Academy that Walter’s artistic talent was discovered. An admiring instructor by the name of William Merritt Chase took young Martha under his wing, giving her both inspiration and direction. She additionally enrolled with Chase at his summer school in Shinnecock, Long Island and in 1903, was awarded the Cresson Traveling Scholarship by the Pennsylvania Academy. This sent Martha Walter on travels to France, Italy, Spain, and Holland, where she attended the Grand Chaumiere and the Academie Julian in Paris.
