About the Item
The extensive work of Vilma Eckl covers a period of more than seventy years. Her incomparable artistic talent and her essential contribution to the history of art can be seen in her approach to movement both in the portrayals of dance and in the numerous portrayals of the peasant world of labor. The dynamic creates both a tension-charged color rhythm and her form of brush strokes that seem to anticipate the next movement.
At the beginning of her artistic development, the watercolor was the dominant technique she used, later she turned to oil painting to finally discover the adequate medium of her artistic expression in the charcoal and color chalk work, not only because this technique expressed the immediacy of her artistic intention, but also because of the most suitable for capturing the spontaneous gestural expression and working in front of nature, especially with moving objects.
Themes of her works range from still lifes and flowers to the rather rare depictions of landscape, horses and circus. Finally, she also depicts human expression in its most diverse manifestations where themes such as “mother and child”, “devotion”, etc., are an example.
A special role in her work takes the representation of the world of labor – in particular the peasant labor in their seasonal cycle. In addition to the interest in the picturesque appearance of the folk costumes, which they wore at various festivities (weddings, confirmation, etc.), the depiction of the expellees and refugees was based primarily on her sympathy, which is why some compare her ouevre with the work of Käthe Kollwitz which she shared an exhibition with at the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz in 1947.

She completed her painting studies at the Institute for Fine and Media Art at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in Johanna Kandl’s class.
