Yang Jin Long
"The Voice from the Mountains, " Oil on Canvas - Figurative Chinese Painting

1993-96

About the Item

This Painting depicts the 'Miao' minority hill tribe people from Central China. The rich elegance of their native attire denotes the primitive sophistication typical of these indigenous people. Yang Jin Long's philosophy is that the aim of the painter and that of all other human endeavors is the same - to get inspiration from everyday life. A devout humanitarian, Yang often uses symbolism within his paintings. Yang draws his inspiration from the still mental state of self-contemplation, and from self-reflection. His works not only convey his underlying spiritual connection to the greater universe, but also seem to resonate in a universal manner with many simple aspects and emotions that fill our daily lives. Yang was greatly influenced by Chinese watercolor and calligraphy during his early studies. The highly formalized structure used in the teaching of these disciplines inspired Yang to create a new concept, structural in nature, and incorporate this into his painting. His style blends traditional Asian influences and symbols with a classical sense and European inspiration reminiscent of early Christian painters. He sublimely blends various elements into intriguing and thought-provoking compositions that are universal and spiritual, thus appealing to a broad audience. Through his work, Yang finds new opportunities to explore the relationship between living things and their spirituality. His works often iterate his feelings of connection to a larger universe, respecting the past and fully living in the present moment. He seeks to remind us of our visions of utopia and bring to light the prospects for a better world in the future. Yang remarks that "everything in nature, such as a tiny spark, a clear spring, a gentle breeze and a feeble lotus is alive and always has a dialogue with me, urging me to create through my art. This dialogue then creates a harmony of color, texture, and a signature style in my painting that moves me deeply - deep within my heart and soul. This I realize is the truth of nature." Yang also feels that "nature can gradually wipe out the accumulated dirt inside one's heart and renew the inherent quality that inspires man and unites man in heavenly joy." His works embody the spirit of connection felt by each of us to other living things, yet reminds us of our own human character and our place contingent with others in the world. • "Eyes of the Bayou, " Oil on Board - Figurative Painting
    By Lindy Chambers
    Located in Houston, TX
Vibrant, yet also subdued, this work’s use of color and line imbue ordinary subject matter with an uplifting sense of levity and beauty. Bolstered by a strong use of abstract elements and impressionist techniques, this oil on canvas painting is an excellent example of Chambers’ unique stylistic blend. Chambers transforms the pastoral into the extraordinary. Long before she puts paint to a canvas, her artistic process begins with the simple act of paying attention. From the outside looking in, she observes often overlooked aspects of life to discover an otherwise unseen beauty in the ordinary. Her paintings are vibrant compositions of color. She works in two distinct palettes, one bright the other subdued, each containing an incredible diversity of hue and value. Her insistence on variety furthers the idea that everything contains its own unique beauty, if only you stop to notice. Chambers skillfully uses lines and shapes to both break up the vibrancy of the canvas and to imbue her compositions with a narrative power. The line work introduces a tension to the color as the objects of her focus appear to pop and the details of each scene defiantly catch the viewer’s impatient eye. It is in this way that her paintings elevate above mere depiction to offer a lesson in the observation of art. Each painting has strong elements of abstract and impressionist techniques, as well as drawn forms that are cartoon like in character. The blend of the two adds dimension to the flat surface and provides visual anchors in the midst of the cacophony of color. Based in Belleville, Texas, Chambers is a “Texas Big 10 for Art” prize winner at KCAM, a recipient of the “Silver Award” from Art Forward, and the “Alexander Rutsch Painting Award” from the Pelham Art Center. Chambers’ art has been featured in numerous shows in galleries across the United States, including Houston, Lexington, Palm Beach, and New York. Select exhibitions include The Grace Museum in Abilene, the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder, Colorado, the McKinney Avenue Contemporary in Dallas, Texas, the Fort Worth Community Arts Center in Fort Worth, Texas, the Lawndale Art Center in Houston, Texas and the Pelham Art Center in New York. This romantic French 19th century allegoric oil painting on square canvas has a sky blue background, a fluffy cloud fills the central part of the painting where a woman is lying down playing the lyre, while a graceful cherub seems to twirl over her. This oil on canvas painting represents the allegory of music - with a woman dressed in classical clothes and a putto- a very popular theme during all the neoclassical age, with its lively scene inspired by the Rococo period. The composition creates a awesome trompe-l'œil effect thanks to the color palette scheme. Well painted white and gray shadings (chiaro scuro) that stands out from the light blue background in typical grisaille style. This painting originally was an over door frieze...
