Hope by CHEN Yiching - Contemporary Nihonga painting, cosmos flowers, blue

2020

About the Item

Hope is a unique painting by contemporary artist Yiching Chen. This painting is made with earth and mineral pigments on Japanese paper mounted on wood panel. This artwork is a diptych composed of two wood panels of 100 cm x 70 cm (39,4 x 27,6 in); the two panels are joined and the total dimensions are 100 x 140 cm (39.4 × 55.1 in). The artwork is signed, sold frame under a white American box frame and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Chen Yiching produces floral artworks which delicateness equals the precision required by the Nihonga, a Japanese traditional pictorial technique used for their composition. Nihonga literally means: ‘Japanese’ (nihon), ‘painting’ (ga). It keeps a close poetic relationship with the elements of nature, not only with subjects, but also with the materials used in its technical creation. Although traditional, this technique offers creative possibilities that can be constantly added to, especially with the use of colour. Indeed, this highly meticulous technique firstly requires the creation of the pigment (enogu) from crushed minerals and plants which once mixed with glue (nikawa) and water creates the paint, the raw material of Nihonga. Traditionally applied in several successive layers on mounted paper, this raw material, sometimes augmented by metal leaf, produces an impression of surprising transparency typical of Chen Yiching’s works

Her works have been in the past approached to the works of Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1770), but in Gullotta's paintings the absence of color makes the spaces particularly ethereal, allowing them to be ideally lifted to new places and to new life. We often speak of a "brain drain," but in this case we are truly happy to be able to say that this is a "return," and an important one: an artist of international caliber who has decided to entrust her return to her homeland to Almach Art...
