Dario Santini
Rug Merchant watercolor by Dario Santini (Italian, 1874-1924)

About the Item

Dario Santini, an Italian painter born in Ancona in 1874, largely focused on subjects of the west in his practice, making an orientalist painting by him rather rare. Skillfully rendered in watercolor, a young man reclines in a stately home, fanning himself with a peacock feather fan, donning a turkish vest, a coin strung head piece and bright red slippers, all hallmarks of orientalist depictions of the Ottoman Empire. A Rug merchant diligently showcases one of his rugs to the young man, who smiles politely in return. Santini, skilled in rendering architecture, depicts splendid moulded wall designs on the horseshoe arch in the background. A gorgeous composition overall.  (Italian,  Ancona 1874- Roma 1924) Medium: Watercolor on Paper  Dimensions: 12 x 28 in framed

Reggianini combined fantasy with reality, sensuality with sensibility and above all, like many of the Florentine historical genre painters furnished his costume pieces in luxury. Reggianini was born in Modena, north Italy, in 1853. He studied at the Modena Academy of Fine Arts where he later became a professor. Like many of his contemporaries, Reggianini migrated south, to Florence, where in 1900 he participated in the Alinari Corcorso with a painting entitled Tristis Matris Nati Presaga Finis.
