Large Oil Painting Still Life and Child by Walter Stuempfig

About the Item

Walter Stuempfig Jr. (American, 1914-1970) Interior: Still Life and Child Oil on canvas, 30 x 40 inches Framed: 36 x 46 inches (approx.) Signed at lower left: "STUEMPFIG" Walter Stuempfig, Jr. was born to a wealthy family in Germantown, Pennsylvania. After graduating from the Germantown Academy in 1930 he briefly studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1931, where he won the prestigious Cresson Scholarship for travel abroad in 1934. He became an instructor of drawing and composition at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1948, and taught there until his death. Stuempfig, who considered himself a “romantic realist,” became noted for both his figural compositions and landscapes of the Philadelphia area and New Jersey shore. The aura of mystery and detachment in these compositions is reminiscent of Edward Hopper, an artist with whom Steumpfig is often compared.
