About the Item
“What he has learned from the art of the museums, Cobb has fully assimilated and modified in the development of his own personal vision. And while enriched by these historical perspectives, that vision also fully reflects keen awareness of the landscapes he has encountered in life, and filtered – as Courbet might have said – through his own temperament. Paradoxically, John Cobb’s landscapes are at once realistic and imaginative, for they express both the external reality in which he lives and the interior ‘fantastic’ world he makes for himself."
- Dr. David A. Lewis, “John Cobb: Visions of the Texas Landscape,” essay from the exhibition catalogue published by The Cole Art Center, Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas, 2014-2015.
John Cobb knew he wanted to be an artist since he was 9. In 1976, he entered Rhode Island School of Design where his realist tendencies were ostracized. Using the money intended for his education, Cobb moved to Europe, bought a Vespa, and learned by independent study in museums and by making watercolors in Morocco, Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy. When funds ran low he returned to Austin to finish his art degree at St. Edward’s University in 1983. John Cobb has remained in Texas, creating his landscape compositions outdoors. Valley House Gallery first exhibited his landscapes, as well as his Chapel installation, in December 2012.

- MuskokanBy Robert MarchessaultLocated in Montreal, QuebecMy painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces. Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance. My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements.
