About the Item

This painting is by Abraham Jacob Bogdanove Russian/American, 1887-1946 and is titled The Squall, Monhegan, 1943 Signed A. J. Bogdanove and dated 1943 (lr); inscribed The Squall #213 on the stretcher Oil on canvas 40 x 50 inches 48 x 57 3/4 framed Provenance: Estate of the artist Exhibited: New York, The New York Historical Society, Allied Artist of America, Inc., Thirteenth Annual Exhibition, 1943 Spanierman Gallery, LLC, New York, Abraham Bogdanove (1886-1946): The Lure of Maine, Jun. 7-Jul. 16, 2007, no. 42 One of the veteran artists of Monhegan Island, Maine, in the first half of the twentieth century, Abraham Bogdanove spent his summers working outdoors and capturing many facets of this remote rocky island that has had so much appeal for so many American artists. Often rising early to catch the morning light, he stood at precarious points on rocks that extended into the pounding surf. Using pigments that he mixed from raw materials, he worked directly so as to record waves in motion, as they broke against the knife-like edges of craggy outcroppings, their presence evoking a primitive geological past. In these images, he juxtaposed nature's endurance and its temporality. ADDITIONAL NOTES & CONDITION REPORT This is one of Bogdanove's best of Monhegan I feel and quite a large painting. Photos show a glare which is a reflection of the flood light. It has been glue relined with minimal touch ups both painting and frame. Glue relined. Frame rubbing. There are some minor tiny touches of inpaint scattered. Abraham Jacob Bogdanove (September 2, 1888 – August 1946) was an American artist, mural painter, and teacher best known for his seascape paintings of the Maine coast, particularly around Monhegan Island. From Wikipedia AJ Bogdanove in His Studio Bogdanove was born in Minsk, (Russian Empire now Belarus), on September 2, 1888, and moved with his family to New York City on December 25, 1900.[1] For the next ten years he studied, first from 1901 to 1903 at Cooper Union, then from 1903 to 1911 at the National Academy of Design, and also at Columbia University School of Architecture from 1908 to 1910, while simultaneously painting advertisement displays and drafting for the New York Journal.[1] From 1909 to 1911 he received prizes for his paintings in National Academy exhibitions. In 1911, Young Bogdanove was commissioned to paint a mural of "Diana in the Bath" for the Fleischman Baths at 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue. He later took Fleischman to court because Fleischman reneged on the $90 fee and offered bath tickets in lieu of payment, stating that Bogdanove's Diana was not beautiful enough, and that the artist spent more time looking at scantily clad women than he did painting. Bogdanove was awarded $75.[2] In 1912 Bogdanove received his second mural commission from the Hebrew Sheltering and Guardian Society in Pleasantville, New York; subsequently he painted murals for the Architectural League of New York, Commercial High School, Brooklyn, Alexander Hamilton High School, Brooklyn, Manual Training High School, Brooklyn, Public School 43, Bronx, and the College of the City of New York.[1] Mural painted in 1912 by AJ Bogdanove for the Hebrew Sheltering and Guardian Society Bogdanove first visited Maine in 1915, summering at Mount Desert Island, and in 1918 he visited Monhegan Island, purchasing a house there in 1920;[1] thereon he visited Monhegan every year until his death in 1946, becoming an established presence on the island and producing a series of landscapes and seascapes that would constitute the largest part of his painting.[3] For his interest in the powerful dramatic effects of weather on the ocean and land, rather than geographically specific depictions, Bogdanove has been characterized as an heir to Winslow Homer.[4] Of his work on Monhegan, described as "rugged, colorful, and forceful",[5] Bogdanove said in an interview in 1936, There are a number of reasons why I prefer Monhegan to all other places on the Atlantic coast.... The cliffs are so bold and precipitous and the studies offered by the island shore so inexhaustible. The climate suits me. Perhaps [it is] because it is more like that of Russia, where my ancestors lived.[5] In an interview in 1945, he explained, I have painted the Gaspe, the cliffs of Cornwall, the Riviera, but there's a magnetic force in these rocks here, I believe, which brings us back again and again.[6] Composite photo comprising fourteen separate photos of A.J. Bogdanove's 1930 mural "The Great Teachers" in the Lincoln Hallway of Shepard Hall in the College of the City of New York, commissioned by CCNY's Class of 1901 From 1913 to 1942 Bogdanove taught art at high schools and colleges in New York City, the longest association being with Townsend Harris High School of the College of the City of New York.[1] In 1942 Bogdanove moved to Dunbarton, New Hampshire, where he died in 1946.[1] In 1957 he was the subject of an exhibition at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, in 1961 at the College of the City of New York,[1] and in three exhibits at New York's Spanierman Gallery between 1997 and 2000. SELLERS STATEMENT I have been in the art business as an artist and dealer since the early 80's. Almost 40 years now. I primarily concentrate on my own art. My art is derived in a variety of ways. I'm a responder. I respond to light, color, design, etc and I love painting both outdoors on location and in the studio under a controlled environment. I try to convey an idea, mood or just simply a beautiful setting. I'm inspired by a wide variety of subject matter and styles of painting and do not adhere to just one way. My paintings have won numerous awards over the years and have been collected both nationally and internationally. They can be found in three museum collections, the White House Collection and many private collections.

  • Paris Evening
    By Robert McIntosh
    Located in West Hollywood, CA
Presenting an magnificent just discovered original oil painting by American artist Robert McIntosh(1916-2010.) "Paris Evening", is an original oil on panel, signed, dated 2003 with an image dimension of 8.25 x 10.25 inches, currently unframed. A biography on the career of Robert McIntosh included below, please contact the gallery for additional information. Robert McIntosh (1916-2010) Robert McIntosh was borth on March 11, 1916 near San Francisco, in Vallejo, California, the second son of Harry and Jesusita Coronado McIntosh. He found his lifelong passion for painting by the time he was ten years old and never swayed from his calling. The family moved to Stockton when Robert was 12. Their home was just six blocks from the newly opened Haggin Museum, filled with a treasure trove of European and American paintings. He became particularly enamored with the fine examples of 19th century French pastoral landscapes. As teens, Robert and his brother Harrison befriended local painter Arthur Haddock who taught them the craft of art and brought them along on outdoor painting trips. Robert also became skilled at drawing portraits that captured the subject's personality. Soon, the sheer joy of expressing himself this way became a consuming interest. When not sketching, McIntosh would wander the stacks of books at the public library, discovering and studying the Masters - in particular, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Whistler. At a Gauguin exhibit at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, Robert discovered a "whole new world of color" and the importance of designing the space in the eternal rectangle. "I envision a frame around everything I see, "he admitted. "The artists' challenge is to put something meaningful, interesting or beautiful in that space." In 1934 McIntosh won a competition for a scholarship to the Art Center School of Design, the first award they ever bestowed. The entire family moved to Los Angeles and a new vista...
