About the Item

Two weeks after “Ranger” had won the America’s Cup, the J Class fleet raced together on the New York Yacht Club Cruise of 1937. The painting depicts a race to Edgartown, not long after the start near Mattapoisett. “Ranger”, J5, on port tack has just crossed ahead of “Rainbow”, J4 and “Endeavour I”, J K4. “Yankee”, J US2, follows astern of “Ranger”. At the right hand background is “Endeavour II”, the unsuccessful challenger for the 1937 America’s Cup. Harold Vanderbilt is on the wheel of “Ranger”. Just behind him is his wife, Gertrude. Alongside is his assistant helmsman (skippered “Ranger” downwind) Olin Stephens. Crouching next to Olin Stephens is Zena R. Bliss, the navigator. Arthur Knapp, sail trimmer, is amongst the crew on the windward deck. Rod Stephens, rover (ready for any urgent job) and without a shirt on, is crouching on the leeward deck watching the set of the staysail and quadrilateral jib. “Ranger” pulled away from the other J Class on the beat to the Vineyard Sounds lightship, rounding over 8 minutes ahead of second placed “Endeavour II”. “Rainbow” pulled out from the race with backstay problems. “Ranger” won the race followed by “Endeavour II”, “Yankee” and “Endeavour I”. Thirty years ago there were only a handful of professional artists pursuing marine art full time. Today, as a result of a renewed surge of international interest in this enduring art form, there are now literally thousands of artists around the world who are devoting their considerable talents to keeping this traditional art form alive and flourishing. In the maritime nation of New Zealand foremost among these is A.D. Blake. Hailing from a celebrated maritime family – his brother was internationally renowned sailor Sir Peter Blake – Tony’s dazzling yacht racing scenes first appeared in the American market twenty years ago. They were an instant success. Since then, he’s grown to become recognized as one of the world’s leading marine artists. When the New York Yacht Club wanted to commission an artist to commemorate their 150th anniversary with a painting of the Club’s first regatta, they chose A.D. Blake. The Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, England selected one of Tony’s paintings to be included in the official program of the historic America’s Cup Jubilee regatta held there in 2001. Three of his paintings were included in the 1999/2000 America’s Cup program in Auckland, New Zealand. The newest edition of the definitive book on America’s premier family of yacht designers Herreshoff of Bristol features one of Blake’s paintings on the cover. He’s also been commissioned by both the Herreshoff Maritime Museum and the Storm Trysail Club to produce paintings for their collections in addition to completing many commissions for private collectors. His work is featured alongside other prominent marine artists in Yachts on Canvas by James Taylor, assistant curator of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. A trained engineer, competitive racer and designer of boats himself, Blake is able to depict both the drama and the intricacies of yacht racing with an accuracy and vibrancy that is stunning. His subjects range from classic yachts and contemporary races to complex harbor scenes. But it’s his understanding of the play of light and shadow on the sea and on vessels moving through the water together with an energetic use of oil paint that combine to give his paintings a distinctive look that is instantly recognizable to sailors and marine art connoisseurs alike. When not painting, he served as Chairman of the New Zealand Classic Yacht Association and skippers the 1894, 59 ft. gaff rigged yacht Thelma, racing her with a crew of 12-15.
