Alex McIntyre
Alex McIntyre, Like Fiction, Traditional Contemporary Landscape Painting

2020

About the Item

Alex McIntyre, Like Fiction, ink and gesso on birch panel, 100 x 150cm. Completed in March 2020, Like Fiction, has its roots in journeys on foot in the countryside during winter whilst I was training for a half marathon. It is a response to the dreaminess of damp light, the muscly-ness and light bursts of winter clouds against dull gold fields and the dark grey and brown tones of naked trees. It is running up hills and across fields with the wind full in my face and chill, exhilarated skin.

The texture of the raised gesso contrasts with polished smooth absences, it feels as though these thicker and thinner areas parallel the texture of clouds. Those moments where the sunlight is suppressed under denser cloud and then seems to burst through, vivid and glowing. Like Fiction named itself just as we went into lockdown. Alex McIntyre artist available online and in our gallery with Wychwood Art. Alex comments "The paintings are the result of accumulated and translated experiences. They come from a deep love for the world we live in and from a sense of awe and wonder. I hope they will speak to you of light, sky, journeys, the touch of weather or the smell of different seasons – and that they will remind you of places you have known or would like to know. The creative process of a painting has several stages. I begin by walking, running and drawing and taking ‘fast photographs’ outside. This is a way of feeling the landscape at a cellular, and sensory level. In the studio I have prepared birch or poplar panels with layers of a traditional gesso ground (a mixture of rabbit skin glue and whiting). Gesso is a sensitive and responsive material. It remembers being a liquid and communicates every minute scratch or bump. This means that the painting process is like a conversation. I create texture with a brush and palette knife or by sanding and carving back into the gesso. Thinking about the 3 dimensionality of the picture plane, I begin by using a high-quality light fast acrylic ink to reveal the textured surface and add base colour. I build on this colour ground by adding, and removing, layers of acrylic mixed media. The painting gradually evolves through an intuitive and physical interaction with the materials. I aim for a sense of balance or charge between saturated areas of colour patina and stripped back areas without paint. I know they are finished when I feel a sense of “lining up”, when the painting and I have both said enough. Often, this is when the painting tells me its name." Working as a professional artist since 2007, Alex paints from a studio in Hertfordshire, UK. She creates art for exhibitions, commissions, specific sites and through collaborations with other creative professionals. Alex has exhibited in the UK, United States and Romania. She has work in commercial and private collections in the United States, Japan, Norway, Germany, France, Holland and across the UK. After the rain [2021] Signed by the artist Acrylic on wooden panel Image size: H:51 cm x W:51 cm x D:2cm Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look I have always been a bit obsessed with horizons and how a horizontal line on a painting becomes 'landscape' in the viewers mind. I love the idea of suggesting a landscape, but then abstracting the subject and using the materials in such a way that the texture and details made by the paint, and the grain of the wood panel, are as important if not more so than the subject itself." Rebecca enjoys balancing on the fine line between abstraction and representation, to imply a landscape with paint rather than accurately visually recording it. Her landscapes are somehow subliminal. Somehow ‘other’. Somewhere not quite real. An idea or a memory of a landscape. She aims to create an emotionally charged atmosphere with colour and texture and line, working with paint for paint’s sake. Rebecca Tucker...

    Located in BARCELONA, ES
If painting still respects a logic that legitimizes its practice and existence in our hyper-saturated civilization of the image, it is its ability to break the representation, to open a crack on the slippery LCD surface behind which reality takes shape and action, a crack that even if it was imperceptible, has permanent and incisive effects, destined as it is to open more and more. And it’s just around the idea of the crack that Giorgio Petracci...
