About the Item

Allison Gildersleeve was born in Connecticut in 1970, earned her B.A. from the College of William and Mary and her M.F.A. from Bard College. Gildersleeve lives and works in Brooklyn, New York; she was awarded the New York Foundation of the Arts Fellowship in Painting in 2008. Gildersleeve has had solo exhibitions in New York City, Denver, and Stockholm. Valley House Gallery presented Gildersleeve’s first exhibition in Texas, “Allison Gildersleeve: Closer Than They Appear,” in 2015. In her work, Gildersleeve addresses the theme of memory, exploring the phenomenon of past and present becoming collapsed or entwined by the emotional experience. Gildersleeve states: “In these works, I apply paint to describe a form but also allow the paint strokes to become forms in themselves: maybe it’s an animal head, a person’s shadow, a finger or a foot. Figuration and abstraction coexist in a state of divided attention, just as the mind can focus on the task at hand while replaying a past experience. The background becomes part of the foreground, eliminating the middle ground, just as distant events can infiltrate the present to the point of distortion.”

  • The Orange Wall of San Miguel #2
    By Carole Garland
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
A quiet street of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico is the subject of this painting by Carole Garland. An elderly woman cautiously makes her way along a narrow path using a tree to lend support. The orange wall provides much needed shade in the afternoon heat. Light seeps through the branches of a colorful bougainvillea patterning the orange bulwark. Artist Carole Garland who studied art in both San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City shares her appreciation of the simplicity of this quiet backstreet in a Mexican town. A special moment in time is brought to life. Garland uses the scumbling technique and a paint laden palette knife to achieve texture and depth in the leaves, the branches and the rough pavement of the street. This oil on wood panel is 16"x20" and its natural wood sides serve as a frame. The painting is wired for easy hanging. This is a stand-alone artwork but was conceived as a companion piece to Orange Wall of San Miguel #1. Together they are 16"x 40". Artist Carole Garland has appeared in numerous venues throughout Southern California, including several juried California Art Club exhibits and individual shows at TAG Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work has recently appeared at the West Los Angeles College Art Gallery; the Rose Cafe, Venice; Topanga Canyon Art...
