About the Item

AGAVE, an oil painting on canvas by Anna Ortiz, measures 12" high x 16" wide. Agave is recent work and characteristic of the artist's practice – the palette is restrained, the colors are harmonious and surreal – with muted golds and greens, with the succulent's leaves seeming very alive, this vital plant on the edge of a forest or copse is all the more forceful given its composition. As the background recedes in scale, the agave grows in stature. From Anna Ortiz – "Inspired by the archeology of Mesoamerican figures and the landscape of Mexico, the creatures in my paintings come to life in dream-like landscapes where they are neither dead nor alive. Their narrative nature references ancient Aztec and Mayan mythology. Out of the ruins of a previous existence, these new gods embrace their ambiguity. Dualities define them and give them shape. Weaving together invented spaces with references to actual locations, the paintings take both a familiar tone and a sense of the uncanny." Anna Ortiz (born in Worcester MA, currently living in Brooklyn NY) is a painter primarily focused on creating socio-psychological landscapes. Her work reflects on global issues through painterly collapses and constructions. Ortiz received a BA/BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. During her undergraduate years, she spent a year studying at the Louvre in Paris. Ortiz completed her MFA at Tyler School of Art, spending her second year in Rome Italy. Her work has been exhibited at Proto Gomez, Transmitter, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Partners and Son and Lesley Heller, New York.
