About the Item
AGAVE, an oil painting on canvas by Anna Ortiz, measures 12" high x 16" wide. Agave is recent work and characteristic of the artist's practice – the palette is restrained, the colors are harmonious and surreal – with muted golds and greens, with the succulent's leaves seeming very alive, this vital plant on the edge of a forest or copse is all the more forceful given its composition. As the background recedes in scale, the agave grows in stature.
From Anna Ortiz – "Inspired by the archeology of Mesoamerican figures and the landscape of Mexico, the creatures in my paintings come to life in dream-like landscapes where they are neither dead nor alive. Their narrative nature references ancient Aztec and Mayan mythology. Out of the ruins of a previous existence, these new gods embrace their ambiguity. Dualities define them and give them shape. Weaving together invented spaces with references to actual locations, the paintings take both a familiar tone and a sense of the uncanny."
