About the Item

Antique American impressionist seascape signed oil painting. Oil on canvas. Signed. Framed. Image size, 16L x 12H. Artist Bio: Arthur James Beaumont was born in Yorkshire, England in 1877. He studied with Julius Olsson in London before moving to Paris at the turn of the century. In Paris, Beaumont studied at the Academie Julian* with William Adolphe Bougereau. The Academie awarded him a gold medal in 1905. After completing his studies, Beaumont settled in Cornwall where he became known for his marine and landscape scenes as a member of the St. Ives School*, an artist colony. While living in Cornwall, Beaumont traveled to the United States to exhibit his paintings. In 1906 he settled in New York, buying a house on Staten Island with his brother and sister in law, Ernest and Henrietta Beaumont, also artists, who arrived from England in 1907. Although Arthur Beaumont would remain a resident of Staten Island until his death in 1956, he traveled extensively. Prior to the outbreak of World War I, he spent sufficient time in Cornwall to be considered a member of the St. Ives school of painters. Following the end of the War, Beaumont returned frequently to England and the Continent, painting marine and landscape scenes in St. Tropez, Venice, St. Ives and Brittany. Extended trips were made also to art colonies in New England and Canada- Rockport, Gloucester and Provincetown (Massachusetts), Ogunquit and Mattinicus Island (Maine), Dover Plains (New York), Sharon (Vermont) and Grand Manan Island and Gaspe Peninsula (Canada). Beaumont never married, never had an agent, lived simply and was known to be self-effacing and modest. He was affiliated with many professional organizations in New York including the Salmagundi Club*, American Watercolor Society*, Allied Artists of America* and the Society of Independent Artists*. The record of his accomplishments is incomplete, but it is known that he was awarded two prizes for his watercolors at the American Water Color Society and at least one at the Salmagundi Club. Beaumont served on the Jury of Awards at the American Watercolor Society and the Board of Control of the New York Watercolor Club. Archival data disclose that Beaumont contracted to design and paint stage sets, most notably for the actress Maud Adams. During the 1930's Beaumont served on Committees including the American Federation of Arts*, the Mayor's Municipal Art Committee and the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences' Section on Art. In retirement, Beaumont demonstrated his watercolor technique in a film made in conjunction with a special exhibition under the aegis of the Staten Island Board of Education. His works are in the permanent collection of the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences (now the Staten Island Museum) and the Staten Island Historical Society.
