Bernardus Johannes Blommers
L'attente

About the Item

BLOOMERS "L’attente” Oil on panel. 30 x 26.5 cm. Signed lower right Son of a talented lithographer, he was initially destined for the same profession as his father. But at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, he abandoned the chisel for brushes. He exhibited for the first time in 1869, and by chance his painting was placed next to those of Josef Isarëls who noticed its qualities and took him in, as a student. He exhibited everywhere in Amsterdam, The Hague, Paris, Antwerp and won numerous medals. However, he remains very indifferent to honors, satisfied only by the happiness procured by his large family, and by the joy of translating his admiration for nature using his brush. Blommers painted genre scenes and landscapes with delicacy and feeling, but above all he remains a happy interpreter of simple life. Museums: Amsterdam – Glasgow – Groningen – The Hague – Montreal – Munich – Rotterdam
