About the Item
Great Rockport Street Scene by Carl Peters. He was born in 1897 in Rochester, New York, to German immigrants; he found his calling as an artist at an early age. Raised in modest surroundings, his family later moved to a fruit farm, shaping his connection to nature.
Leaving high school to pursue art, Carl studied at the Mechanics Institute while working on the family farm and in an art studio. His artistic talent shone, earning him recognition and prizes. In World War I, his skills as a scenery painter led him to serve as a camouflage artist in France.
Post-war, Carl's artistic journey soared. He garnered accolades, becoming nationally known for his impressionistic landscapes. The Great Depression drove him to government-sponsored mural work, including a celebrated piece at the Fairport Public Library in Rochester.
Amidst life's changes, including the end of his first marriage, Carl found solace and inspiration in two significant places. Winters were spent in Fairport, capturing the essence of frozen creeks and landscapes. Summers brought him to Rockport, Massachusetts, a coastal haven for artists. There, he met Blanche, his second wife and lifelong partner.
In Rockport, Carl's cottage studio became a sanctuary where he painted daily and offered lessons to vacationers. Summers in Rockport, coupled with winters in Fairport, formed the backdrop of his prolific artistic output.
Today, Carl W. Peters is celebrated for his captivating winter scenes and nautical views. His paintings, bearing the distinct signature, adorn galleries and museums, including the Fairport Public Library in Rochester. His legacy is one of dedication to art, a connection to nature, and a humble, gentle spirit that touched those who knew him.
