Carole Garland
City of Angels Hall

2018

About the Item

The artist Carole Garland, from Chicago, remembers her move to Los Angeles and her wonder at "Where are all the tall buildings? and Why so much blue sky?" She came to love the City of Angeles over time and devoted a series of paintings to the city to show it. This painting of the iconic Los Angeles City Hall and its surrounds was part of a Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) series exhibited at TAG Gallery, Los Angeles, in 2018. The architect John Parkinson was responsible for the concept and architectural design of City Hall, completed in 1928. The style was considered "Modern American" although the tower is very much Art Deco. Garland's interpretive urbanscape juxtaposes simplified geometric blocks of color with blocks of light and shadow. She chronicles the downtown area in this painting but shakes off realism and follows an instinctive desire to let the paint, the city and the atmosphere coalesce into a work of unusual strength.

  • Venice Beach
    By Carole Garland
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
Depicts Carole Garland reveling in a hot summer day at the Venice Beach. Colorful beach umbrellas shield the timid from the burning sun while sunbathers bask in the searing heat. Yellow and blue ribbons floating on the wind celebrate Venice’s chaos and its whimsy. To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit. Carole Garland graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the University of the Americas in Mexico City. She has worked privately with artists Keith Finch and Ron Pekar, taken numerous workshops and was mentored by David Gallup...

Her work, which has been exhibited at notable institutions such as MOMA PS1 and galleries including Cheim & Read Gallery (NY) and Carl Hammer Gallery (Chicago), has evolved from over the years from pastels to large-scale oil paintings and installations of people who she describes as “having not been integrated into mainstream society.” Her more recent paintings, inspired by selfies and iPhone photographs, attempt to convey the vitality and diversity of 21st century contemporary culture while capturing the ineffable moments in our lives. “The sensuality and radiant beauty of youth and ethnic diversity are depicted in my choice of subjects, as well as the ravages of time which are imprinted on our being. All stages of life are filled with humanity that both elevates and dissipates the spirit.” Her work has been written about in The NY Times, Art News, The Village Voice, The Star-Ledger, Newsday, Flash Art...
