L'artista di origine romana Cesare Maggi si affermò come paesaggista di stampo divisionista, ritraendo paesaggi alpini engadinesi e valdostani, spesso vivacizzati dall'inserimento di figure e animali. Diventato amico del pittore Giacomo Grosso a Torino nel 1901, si orientò poi con successo verso il genere del ritratto, accantonando la tecnica divisionista. Pur prediligendo ancora le vedute d'alta montagna, ampliò i propri soggetti impegnandosi anche nelle marine e nelle nature morte.
In quest'opera, ancora del primo periodo, il Maggi ritrae uno scorcio di campagna attraversata da un calmo fiume, costeggiato da filari d'alberi spogli e da piccoli rilievi erbosi, dietro cui si affacciano i casolari: già non più legata alle dalle tecniche divisioniste, l'opera è caratterizzata piuttosto da impasti di colore densi e opachi, in cui si vanno a sovrapporre la terra, l'acqua i casolari in un continuum rotto solo dalla fascia del cielo sovrastante.
L'opera è presentata in cornice in stile.
