About the Item

Oil on canvas painting by the American artist, Charles Dormon Robinson. Signed lower left with the initials S.F. after signature. Perhaps, San Francisco. Unlined and unframed. Charles Dormon ROBINSON 1847 - 1933 Charles Dormon Robinson was born in East Monmouth, Maine on July 17, 1847. The Robinson family moved to Newport, Vermont shortly after the birth of Charles Dormon. In 1848 his father migrated to California followed by mother and child two years later. His father, Dr. David G. Robinson, was a theatrical producer and playwright who was responsible for constructing San Francisco's first theaters and the plays for their stages. The senior Robinson was a member of the Vigilance Committee and was forced to leave San Francisco in 1857 due to reprisal from the criminal element. Wife and child were left without a means of support and had to shift for themselves. The younger Robinson loved the ships passing through the Golden Gate and began sketching them at an early age. His first art training was at age seven in the studio of Charles Christian Nahl. At age thirteen he was presented with a diploma from the Mechanics' Institute for best marine drawing in the juvenile department. In 1861 he and his mother returned to the East where he studied with artists William Bradford and George Inness. He also studied briefly with F. R. Gignoux, Jasper Cropsey, and received criticism from Bierstadt and James Hamilton. Yearning for California, he started west but stopped in Clinton, Ohio where he married Kathryn Evelyn Wright in 1874. Settling in San Francisco, he worked re-touching photographs and for awhile had his own business in Alameda. Both he and his wife wrote and illustrated for Century and Overland Monthly publications. By 1875 Robinson was devoting full time to painting. He had his first showing at the San Francisco Art Ass'n in 1876, and recognition as a first-rate marine painter came in 1878 at the Sacramento State Fair where he won all prizes and sold one of his paintings to Governor Booth. In 1880 he visited Yosemite for the first time and subsequently spent 24 summers there. One painting, sold there to a British noble, was presented to Queen Victoria and hung in Buckingham Palace, and the King of Siam bought one of his oils while visiting San Francisco. During 1899-1901 he further studied with Boudin and Sagantini in Paris. At the time of the 1906 disaster he and his family were living in San Francisco at 1633 Laguna. He had moved most of his paintings to a warehouse for safe keeping; however, the building burned destroying a great portion of his earlier works. Once again fire destroyed their home in 1921 taking with it 20 years of his Yosemite works. A prolific plein air painter, Robinson followed in the tradition of the Hudson River School. He died on May 8, 1933 in San Rafael, California. Member: San Francisco Palette Club(cofounder & first secretary.); San Francisco Art Ass'n; Bohemian Club. Exhibited: Sacramento Agricultural Society, 1878, 1903 (gold medal); California Midwinter International Expo, 1894; Mark Hopkins Art Institute, 1897; Bohemian Club, from 1897; Gump's, 1900; California State Fair, 1930. • “Dans la Rivière”
    Located in Southampton, NY
Beautiful oil on canvas post impressionist painting by the French artist, Edmund Amedee Heuze. Signed lower right. Circa 1920. Condition of the painting is very good. No restorations. His paintings rarely come to the market. The painting is housed in a contemporary gold leaf gallery frame. Overall framed measurements are 24.25 by 28.75 inches. Provenance: Papillon Gallery (gallery label verso) Edmond Heuze 1883-1967 Edmond Heuzé was a painter, pastellist, watercolourist, and lithographer. His birth name was Amédée Le Trouvé. He was born in Paris, the son of a tailor and a seamstress. Heuzé wanted to be an artist from early childhood, and refused to follow his father into the tailoring profession. When he was 11, His parents moved to Montmartre, and it was there, in rue Cortot, that the thirteen-year-old Edmond Heuzé and his boyhood friend André Utter met Suzanne Valadon, whom Utter would later marry. Heuzé moved into an attic room in 8, rue Cortot, with another friend, the young Russian sculptor Laxine. For two years they studied under Valadon, until Laxine entered the atelier of Fernand Cormon at the Beaux-Arts; Laxine was soon to kill himself. Edmond Heuzé too studied under Cormon, but flounced out when Cormon made fun of his large nose. Discouraged, Heuzé took up a tailoring job at the department store La Samaritaine. But when his portrait of Suzanne Valadon was accepted by the 1902 Salon d'Automne, he resolved to devote himself to art. To support himself, Heuzé took a job as a dancer at the Moulin Rouge, where he danced with La Goulue. For two years he entered dance competitions across Europe under the name Williams. He also taught the painter Maurice Utrillo, who was the son of Suzanne Valadon. In 1908, Heuzé had his first solo exhibition, at the galerie Berthe Weill. The following year he went to Saint Petersburg, where he was the curator of the art collection of Grand Duke Nicolas. On the outbreak of WWI Edmond Heuzé returned to Paris to join up, but was only mobilized for a few months. In Paris he survived doing odd jobs in Les Halles. Continuing with his own art, Heuzé also acted as an intermediary between collectors and artists such as Picasso, Vlaminck, and Valadon. This led to Heuzé being appointed artistic director of the galerie Sagot in rue Lafitte. In 1920 Heuzé exhibited at Bernheim alongside Maurice Asselin, Emily Charmy, and Lucien Mainssieux...

A beautiful woman sits at an open window, gazing down at a small bird who has landed nearby in this serene portrait by Charles Levier. Warm orange tones are played off their complements in shades of blue, the artist utilizing several different layers of oils to create a subtle and relaxed view of a spring day near the sea. Beyond the window a small chapel sits on a peninsula, surrounded tranquil blue waters. This work, like many of Levier's, belongs to the French figurative movement of the Glorious Thirty (Les Trente Glorieuses) - the golden period of thirty years after WWII which were a time of great hope and prosperity in France. Inspired by Hollywood cinema, Charles Levier sought harmony in composition and purity of color and form. His said that his creations represented "a light and delicate world, of dark and subtle shades and colors." Levier worked in a somewhat abstracted, cubist style. Additionally he often employed the French technique of "cloisonnism" (after the French for "partition"), a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours, also seen in this work. The term was coined by critic Edouard Dujardin on the occasion of the Salon des Indépendants, in March 1888 and was commonly used by artists like Émile Bernard, Louis Anquetin, Paul...
